Black Box under drivers seat

Hi all
I have a 1996 3rd Gen Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-G 3.0 TD
I have been on many forums and web sites trying to find out what this is?
A lot report that the box under the seat is the KRE Control. But if I remove this box my system still locks the doors. I only use a key, I dont have any fobs and there are no buttons on the key. The box has no writing, no labels, no numbers etc it only has a 12 pin cable/plug comming out.
If any body knows what this is I would be greatful.

It could be the security system. That's my best guess.

It could be a GPS tracking device planted there by the government. They may be keeping tabs on you. Is there a white or black, late model, domestic sedan following you right now? Perhaps parked across the street?

Many thanks, will now try to find the remote entry, I got an aftermarket from ebay as I only have 1 key, so i want to fit a new one so that I got a spare and use the remote system. Just need to find it so I can tap the new unit in to the current one.

I'm glad you eliminated those possibilities. I was really worried that if it was a bomb, it might destroy your awesome new truck and the 3.0 TD under the hood.

I have a 96 surf SSR-G as well and it has the same box. I just spent hours removing the insane aftermarket system from japan and was expecting that this was going to be connected somehow, but it wasn't.

My best guess is keyless entry. Mine came with lock/unlock on the ingnition key, yours too?

It's going in for some work next week, I'll question the masters about it and try to get a answer.

How awsome is the intercooled TD? Man I love my new truck.

thanks to others I think it is the alarm, I have just a key no buttons or anything on it, but I can reemove this box and the central locking still works and the engine still starts, so at the moment this box does nothing. Seeing as I only use a key (the only one I got) I assume it has been somehow bypassed so that I can still drive.
Let me know what the EX SPERTS say.

Anybody know where the KRE box is if the one under the drivers seat is the alarm system?

Due to governmental budget cuts big brother cant afford the black helicopters any more and has to rely on black boxes and facebook to keep track of us.

Hi Gary,

I have an absolutely identical box under the seat of my 1995 Prado Land Cruiser 3.0 RHD Japanese import (originally imported to Tanzania, but now in Namibia) and after also spending ages trying to identify it, I CAN NOW CONFIRM that it is a TOYOTA KRE SYSTEM. I verified this by disconnecting it and sure enough my keless remote no longer worked and as you found out, it did not affect the central locking sysem or ignition.

This means that you can now get yourself a remote to lock/unlock the doors!

I only have one, so my next step is to get hold of a second one for the wife and then try programming it. See: How to Program Toyota Keyless Entry | eHow.com

There is a TSB that provides this info for US models. It would appear this is the RS3000 but your year/model isn't specified. But it may give you a start--I guess it could be the 2-button black remote in Fig. 3 on the last page, but it's just a guess. These things are on E-Bay.

Thanks, but it doesn't look like its the RS3000 - the black box and wiring is different and there is no light on the dash. Whats really strange is that the black box under the seat sits in a metal bracket and is secured with a velcro strap, like its supposed to be easily removable.

I'ts starting to look like its a Japanese market thing since no-one with US market vehicles seems to have it.

Oh well, beck to Google .......
