Black centercaps on limited wheels

3 of my center caps have the majority of the paint gone, and it looks pretty bad. I've seen a few 4Runners with the split 6 spoke wheels with black center caps, and it doesn't look that bad.

However, I've never seen the Limited 6 spoke wheels with black center caps.

Anyone here done this, or have a pics of a 4Runner with 'em like that?

It'd be temporary until I get new center caps, or paint the entire wheel a gunmetal color.

I just painted my center caps (limited 5-spoke) yesterday...to match the stock silver color. They look great! I should have taken a pic. Black would be OK I think. It's easy enough to pop them out and re-coat them in a different color, though.

What brand/color paint did you use? How well does it match?

I'd rather have 'em matching, but I have a can of Rust-O-Leum primer, and Rust-O-Leum hammered black finish spray paints in the garage. Technically that paint is more of a dark gunmetal gray than it is black.. but alas, it will do.

My 4Runner is also black, so I thought the black might look OK. I've never been a fan of the black center caps until recently I thought it looks pretty good on the split 6's, not sure I'll feel the same about the limited wheels however..

Well I've started the process..

I sanded most of the flaking paint awake, and just roughed the center caps up in general with sand paper.

I've got a few coats of primer on 'em drying as we speak. After I got a few coats of primer on there I noticed a few spots I should have sanded better, but I'm not too worried about it.

I'm trying to think of how to keep the Toyota emblem the white primer color. I wish I had some sort of thick grease or other substance to line the emblem with before I start spraying the black on... I'm sure I would have something that would work IF I didn't need it...

go out and buy a white paint pen then you can pain the T afterwards

Use an artists very fine paint brush and paint petrolium jelly in it before you spray paint. Then after all is dry, give a good wash to take the jelly out.
Done.

That's what I'll probably end up doing...

This is what I intended on doing using a q-tip... but I didn't have any petroleum jelly. Odd, but I tried using toilet bowl cleaner because it was the thick 'gel' like substance I had... and I don't think it's going to work, lol.

Well.. my hopes that the gel would do ok in place of the petroleum jelly didn't work out. I don't know why I thought the stuff wouldn't dry...

Anyways, it doesn't look too bad. I think it'll look better once I paint the emblem silver. I might leave 'em like this.

Can you tell us what color you used? It would be great to know, and not have to search around for a matching color.

A member on UY said that Duplicolor High Performance Wheel Coating color WP101 is a near perfect match to the original silver.

I just painted my wheels with the Dupli-Color Graphite wheel paint and it looks really good. If you're going to paint them go with that.
