Black Dots on Windshield -- On or Inside Glass?

I thought I read somewhere that the anti-glare dots behind the rear-view mirror are on the surface of the windshield (and not inside one of the glass layers). Does anyone know for sure? They do not feel like they are on the surface.

The reason I ask is that I mounted an EZ-Pass on the dots and the adhesive on the cheap-a** velcro I used melted away. I need to get the rest of the adhesive off, but don't want to use a razor blade or chemical that will also impact the dots if they are on the surface of the glass.

Use some goo-gone and a paper towel.

Once you get them off you should use the 'suction cup' type EZ-PASS holders. I have one and it's mounted just below the mirror support piece on the windshield. What's good about it is: a) you won't see it because the rear view mirror hides it; b) it doesn't affect your forward view; c) you can remove it and reattach it anytime you want in any vehicle you want (you don't need any more of those velcro thingy's); d) you don't attach it to the 'black dots'! :reddance:

another option is to use 3M mounting strips; peel off clean and leave no residue. my EZ-Pass is mounted using the kind with the push-in "velcro" style teeth. works great.
