Black goo in the intake runners

1985 22RE. Pasty black goo in the upper and lower intake plenum. The throttle body is relatively clean, comparatively. Is that going to be a bad PCV, or is there something else that could cause that?

^^same here. Ive changed the pcv and double checked any vaccum lines, so im stumped. Going to take it apart and get it tanked while im getting my injectors out

It could be just normal buildup from nearly 30 years of running.

You also might have a bit more blowby from worn rings, contributing to the buildup. I would clean out the intake manifold, replace your PCV valve, change the oil, and then periodically check if the buildup is coming back quickly.

If it does, it might be time for an overhaul Ie: Rings, bearings, seals, etc.

Thats carbon build up due to blowby. Oil is forced passed the rings and is redirected thru the intake so the engine can burn it up . Over time it builds up on the walls of the intake manifold. Which can cause rough idle and stalling during stops. They make a oil catch cans you can add between the lines of the pcv valve and the air intake that catches all the oil and just sends fumes to be burnt up. Most important in turbo engines.

This is part of the reason why some people remove the egr and just add a vent to the pcv hose instead of plugging it into the intake.
