Black out emblems

I am thinking I want to turn the chrome emblems on my 4R black. I have seen on a couple of the build threads some different ways of doing it, but cannot seem to remember which builds they were and the search was of no help.

Would anybody like to share how they did this to their truck? I would prefer to not remove them, but am not 100% opposed to doing so. If you do remove, I presume it would be with a hair dryer and some floss or something...but then what is best to use for re-applying?

a lot of people seem to be going with the plasti-dip method. Search 'plasti-dip' and see what you come up with.

not 100% sure if thats the correct way of spelling it but it's something of that nature.

I chose to remove them because I did not want the plastic dip to go on the paint.

1. Hairdryer + floss = removes all emblems within 15 mins
2. Front grille- pop hood, pop grille out, screws hold the front emblem

Plastic Dip + Newspaper

Leave the emblems on.

Tape them off as so(maybe better)

Then do a light coat. Let it set for 5-10 minutes.
Then do a heavier coat. Let it set for 30 or so minutes.
Then do a decently thick coat(Dont go crazy). Let it set for about an hour.
Remove the tape.
You will be left with a square of plasti dip. Start to peel it off from on corner.
Then get some toothpicks(they dont scratch the paint) and tweezers(to get the plasti dip out of the letters once you get it off the paint with the toothpick).

And you're done

Yep Plasti-Dip right over the paint. I used a toothpick to get into the areas between the letters. Super simple and NO effect on the factory paint.

Thank you all for the good replies and also the photos to back up the stories.

I will do this as soon as I get off work. My questions:
1.) Why exactly does it not stick to the paint?
2.) Would it peel off the emblem if you tried, you just don't peel it off?
3.) What is the durability, withstand a pressure wash?

I personally find Plastidip a little too... temporary. It's really not very durable... at all. I've done a lot of Plastidip work, most of it get's screwed up pretty fast. My fender flares were Plastidipped, and a pressure washer at my work's car wash ripped it clean off (5 coats worth).

I took mine off and painted them with ordinary spray paint, primer, clear, etc. They held up for a long time until I took a buffer to the truck.

If I had to do it again, though, I'd use some Testors spray enamel and clear on all of them.

I found myself a set of black pearl rear emblems off a truck at the yard. Too bad the front emblem was gone (crashed), but I painted the front with Testors #1813 Black Pearl Spray Enamel and #1814 High Gloss Clear Coat.

So here's a breakdown:

I think I agree if the plastic comes off at a car wash, I do not think it will make it through the tougher winters. I will still make my decision when I get back.

Will somebody help me with the adhesive that should be used to put everything back on if the emblems are taken off?

I have my rims, emblems, rear tailgate over, and front grill all done with Plasti-dip and have had no problems with power washing it (at a commercial car wash). If you have some crazy gas powered pressure washer that shouldn't be used on vehicles anyway you might have issues.
Your standard car washing bay isn't going to give you problems.

3M makes some good adhessive......just go to your local Auto-parts store....there should be some there.....if not....try an Auto-paint supply store.

Did my emblems yesterday. Don't worry about getting it on the paint because it peels right off. I've never heard of anyone having issues with it peeling off in the wash or during winter, but I don't know for sure.

first thing i did was remove the emblems, they came off no prob, took about two hours to get the adhesive off the paint of the rig, decided to just do the two toyota emblems, front and back, went the plasti dip route, over a week into different coats and clear coat, didn't like it took off the plasti dip, then i went out and got some testors black pearl and a satin clear, after letting them sit for a week put them back on, looks great, put a little time in it and go for the paint, worth it

My experience shows that the only positives to Plastidip are temporary, such as a great look, easy application, and easy removal.

I just don't like reapplying plastidip often. I have already done my flares twice and my bumper twice, and even after 5 coats of plastidip and 2 coats of clear, it still manages to get screwed up.

For example, the rear flare is screwed up from passengers and unloading stuff in and out of the back seat:

Here's another spot. If you take it to a wash, or apply any type of gloss dressing, the plastidip literally melts.

Without clear, also, plastidip is extremely grabby, and sticks to dust and oils, dirt and other contaminants. That's why I've cleared mine. Before, after one offroad trip, the bumper and flares were permanently stained I tried everything to clean them. They'd look clean after you wiped them, but then would dry with a stain showing. Finally, I scrubbed so hard with different materials til the plastidip came clean off.

So basically, what I am saying is, if you do you emblems with Plastidip, try not to touch them, and do a clear coat.
