I used paint remover to remove the old clear coat. Then sanded with my 6" DA and used self etching primer and then VHT black wheel paint. The hardest part was the multiple coats of paint remover and the scrubbing.

Rattle can = Spray can. Dupli Color makes some nice wheel paints that I used on my GTI. My winter wheels are Plastidipped and they've held up through the last 4 winters, plus like others have said touch up with PD is easy.

Do you recommend PlastiDip or Dupli Color? And would you definitely put gloss on, or is the plain matte black not that hard to clean?

Would you recommend the VHT paint?? Do you still it will be easy to clean and maintain?

I used a self-etching primer and dupli-color wheel paint. I've been very impressed how well the paint has held up to the various road abuse as well to scrubbing and washing. I think one of the keys to a good result is to take your time and do some proper sanding and prep. The one thing that worried me about plastic-dip was longevity.

Touch up is easy spray some into a cup and dab on with a paint brush. I haven't touched up mine yet. But it's time. It's been two years and three wheel alignments.

I just checked.....I painted them summer of 2014. Picture taken November 2014.

I put clear on the Dupli Color wheels and the glossifier on the plasti dip wheels. Both sets still look good. I have another set of Audi wheels for my GTI that I'm thinking about powder coating, but that's $100 a wheel so I might just paint them since it's a 2001.

It can be found at your local walmart or other big box store.

This stuff is durable when done right.

I did the wheels on my wrangler with 6 coats and no clear. They look the same today as they did in 2013.
