Black + Tint - Badges = Sweet!

After trying it out a few times in Photoshop, I finally debadged the ol' girl yesterday. With the black paint and the tinted front windows, I am really pleased with the result. I wish I'd done it sooner! :)

Note the sticker in the back window. :)

Seems like mine are really loose already...

I've been experimenting with tenatively pulling on them to check how hard they are attached...

Did you use the floss trick to take them off or what??

Yeah. I preheated the letter I was working on and the adjacent one or two next to it. I finally figured that the floss worked better when I "garrotted" the letter and just pulled the ends in opposite directions.

Some of mine were a little "moveable" but were stuck firmly enough, but most letters came off with all of the tape stuck to them. A little more heat easily loosened anything that remained.
 
BTW, the "V8" emblem just clips onto the grille. Makes it easy to remove. Come to think of it, the Toyota emblem in the center of the grille just clips in, too. It's nice to be able to remove them both for a little bit of extra cleaning once in a while. :)
 
Good point... I forgot about heating them first... Did you use a hairdryer or heat gun??

It's been so hot I thought I'd just leave it out in the sun on a hot day, and pick the letters off then...:cool:

I just used a hairdryer. A heat gun might be a little too much; at least harder to modulate.

Your idea of just leaving it in the sun on a hot day might be enough.
 
That's the plan then ...

I'll use the sun first, then hit it with the hairdryer, if needed...

I'll post pics after I do it over the 4th weekend...

Sounds good, Ghost Rider. It should look good on a white truck.

Funny, I took the emblems off of the rear of my Thundercloud Gray '02 SE and didn't really like it. I ended up putting them back on. Don't know why it looks good on the black, but not on the gray.
 
Mine came off with no problems after a day in the sun. The "Toyota" is the hardest because all of the letters are connected togeter. The rest of the letters come off one at a time.
 
It definitely looks better without the letters on. I thought the liftgate would look bad without the letters, but it looks a lot better than with the letters. I want to do it to mine, but I am nervous if I change my mind. How hard would it be to put them back on? Anyway, it definitely looks great on a black one.

It's pretty easy to put the letters back on. You just have to apply some double faced automotive trim tape to the backs and then be careful to make everything straight and spaced right. I did it to my last 4Runner when I didn't like the way it looked without the emblems. Everything stayed on and in place. No problem.

When the 4th generation was introduced in 2002 I was really disappointed that it had lost so much of the distinctive look of the earlier 4Runners that I've always loved. I've kinda gotten used to it, but I've never thought the 4th generation has had the great
look of the earlier ones. Strangely, though, removing a few bits of chrome from my 4th gen seems to have restored much of that "4Runner look" and I'm happier than ever with it.

I gotta agree!!:D when i first saw the 4th gens, i didnt' like it at all, but its grown on me since! especially since seeing all the 4th gen pics here. removing the badges gives it a whole new look, clean & sharp!! and hey gonna be much easier to wax too;):
 
What do you use to get rid of the "sticky stuff" that's left behind by the badges?

I'm thinking about doing this soon, but I don't want to mess up.
