Blacking out SR5 Chrome with Vinyl

Question: Still really not liking the chrome and haven't gotten ballsy enough to take the rattle can to it yet. My wheel and tire guy suggested that I get the chrome wrapped in black vinyl from a local shop that does wraps. He says they have done several for him, it looks great, is inexpensive and holds up well. Has anyone had any experience with doing anything like this? I've never even considered "wrapping" the chrome. It sounds like a good idea if it will in fact look ok and hold up. Thanks.

I "wrapped" the chrome on my Audi. It was time consuming and the stuff doesn't really like to conform to corners or edges...

I've got 2 cans of satin black waiting to go on the SR5 chrome bits already waiting in the wings.

Yeh, I wouldn't try it myself. Never done any vinyl. The shop would do all the work, they do a lot of wrapping. He had a truck there they had done the door handles on and it looked good, I was really surprised.

Like everything else in auto-finishing, it's going to come down to the detail work. I have a custom wrap on my wife's PT and after 3 years it is still there. But the edges are beginning to peel a bit, the color has faded, and it's going to need to be replaced in a year or two. If the shop doing the install is meticulous and detail-obsessive, it will probably look fine. If they are not, it will end up peeling as soon as soap, water, or wax get under the edges.

But if you are willing to pay a shop, why not check out an autobody place and have them paint the chrome?

Yeh, I can have the chrome painted. I did that once before on a truck and it didn't last at all. That was about 10 years ago and maybe there is a better option now, but it sure didn't work out very well then. Eventually it will come down to having them painted or vinyl'd by a shop I reckon. I just can't come to terms with taking a rattlecan to my truck.
