How do you black out your tail lights? (Step by Step) What product do you use? Where do you find it?

You can use a few light coats of this product: Amazon.com: VHT Nite Shades Cover Tint Black Tail Light Lens Coating - Lens Cover Tint: Automotive

I believe they have it at Autozone or PepBoys as well.

Also, a window tint shop can do this as well.

There is a small square access panel on both sides open it up and there is 2 10mm nuts per light and they pop right out. I did mine last week I used VHT nightshades and scuff between each coat then did a few coats of clear over it scuffing between coats as well I used the red scotch bright scuff pads. Also depending how dark you go and the angle of the vehicle and light sometimes one light looks darker then the other as you can see in one of my pictures

Personally I think that product it sh!~ but what do I know I'm just a painter... but if you do go that route it can be taken off with paper towels and thinner ...

so if you spray inside of light you can go back and whip it off with paper towel later if you'd like...

what about outside the light?

You can't get the tails apart, Hamilton sprayed the outside when he removed from 4unner. Others have tried to take the tails apart and ruined them. Get some on ebay.

Why spend close to $100 dollars on tail lights instead of just blacking them out yourself with a product? There's gotta be a solution out there that can remove it from the outside?

$100 would make it done right, and not worry about messing up, wiping off etc, if you dont like them, then resale and replace factory, its alot easier.

The only way to black out stock is to paint outside like hamilton did. which can be wipped off.

What do you mean by remove from outside? if you paint like hamilton, yes you can wipe that off later. If your talking about removing the red, you can forget that.

what i mean is lets say i night shade them today. lets say later i want to take it off... my question is what is a safe (wont damage plastic of light or discolor light) way to take off the spray? i've heard of several methods wet sand, sand, rubbing alcohol, compounds...i want to know the easiest, most efficient, and safest way to take off spray from outside of light

best method with the most quality look and true blacked out lenses and actually you could do it in any color is black candy paint. thats the original way to black out lenses. my dad was doin that shit 20 yrs ago way way before it became popular as it is today.. candy paint is see thru, thus the red lights of your brakes will shine thru.. f@#k that pepboys and autozone bullshit.. get it done the right way.. if you have a local custom paint shop that sells paint, they can make you a small spray can of black candy paint.. ive also done my other custom vehicles in other shades .. my 71 monte carlo which has a magenta candy over purple base also has magenta candy over the rear taillights..

How many dark coats of the Nightshades did you do? And where they light or thick coats?

I tried this stuff back in the day when I was a teenager and drove lowered Hondas... ricer status.

Just think of this stuff as a translucent version of plastidip…

If you do anything other than lights coats, it going to drip and get runny making the entire thing look terrible. Apply thin coats until you get the desired effect.

Personally I think the lights look just fine as they are. Anytime I see this mod it looks pretty cheap / low grade in person. It does not hold up well to abrasion, they progressively look worse over time, they reduce light output which negatively impacts safety, and it’s annoying to clean and restore because unless you went on thick so it peals like palstidip, which is often times too dark, it’s all flaky and breaks up if you try to remove.

On the more adult side of the conversation, the modification can be illegal in some states. Last thing you want to be fighting or defending yourself in a serious accident or getting denied an insurance claim because of stupid stuff like this. It’s just fuel to the fire in a bad situation. On the less serious side, fix it tickets are super annoying and costly.

amazon tailight/headlight tint wrap

i am going to suggest a smoke wrap from Amazon. Ive used this product and its very easy to use. you can also remove without damaging headlights. IMO spray could be uneven if you aren't familiar with spraying.

I had done this a year or two ago before I removed it - if you have an 03-05, the pink lights will turn a nice reddish about 2 coats in. I've done 3, and any more than 3 (including 3 depending on how heavy the coats are) starts to look ricey and becomes a safety issue, especially without LED lights as they become too dim.

If you paint using the NightShade and want to do it properly - add a final light coat ontop of your original amount; if you want the look of 2, do 2 coats and one light coat, so that you can sand it with 2000 grit and polish it out for a perfect finish. This will remove some of the paint and thus why it's recommended to add a little bit more.

If you don't polish the lights after adding the paint, they look pretty bad. 2 coats + a polish/compound looks like the factory 2006 lights, without the LEDs.
