Blew my Motor Last Night.....

Well, 15lbs of boost, 30 degree air temp, and a good tune seemed to be too much for the stock internals to take. Broke a rod last night and now need a good replacement. I found a low mileage motor from a 2002 close by for a decent price. This should fit in my 99 right? I know the throttle by wire is used but I plan on just re-using my current TB on the new motor. Is there anything else I need to consider?

Thanks!

Sorry to hear that Greedy.

You need to get your hands on a 2002 ECU. If I'm not mistaken, there is no way to go 5 speed on that motor.

I would take this opportunity to find a low mileage 99 or 00 motor, save the money on the ECU and get rid of the granny tranny. :bigok:

You might want to consider headers at this point as well.

Haha. Yeah I thought of that too. I kind of thinking that I am almost done with this project. I am considering two different options:

1. Buy a used, low mileage motor and just replace it and transfer the turbo stuff over.
2. Buy a new or remanufactured motor - put my truck back to N/A - and sell my turbo stuff as a kit for another 4runner.

I plan on keeping my 4runner regardless and getting a new project car the beginning of next summer (G37 - BMW 3 series??).

As far as headers go - I already have a custom header on the passenger side and crossover from the drivers side that feed into the turbo. I can go with a completley custom tubular style for $$$ but it won't gain me much since the turbo itself is the biggest restriction in the exhaust system. Plus, I think I am putting down plenty for the stock bottom end already.

I agree with the 99-00 motor + 5-speed comment.

Also, you're looking to get a new G37 or 3-series as a project car??? I don't know exactly what you're looking to do, but right now, if you were going to spend $30K+, I'd get the new 1-series (135i).

Yeah - I'm not sure what I am going to get. I know the two I mentioned have the things I am looking for - Coupe, rear wheel drive, aftermarket upgrade support etc... I'll check out the 1 series too - Thanks!

All I've gotta say is 3.0L Twin Turbo - 300HP/300Ft/lb out of the box. :D The only gripe I have is its weight (~3400lbs). Wish it was in the sub-3000lb mark.

Thats the same motor as in the 3 series - but the 1 series looks nice too. I guess we will see in the spring!

sorry Greedy to bring you back fromt he dead. just want to see any update on your truck? or did you part out the turbo?

Still sitting in my garage with no motor in it :( . I bought a used motor thinking I could just drop it in and be up and running. When it finally got to me (took a month), I took off the intake and valve covers and the cams, exhaust and intake ports were covered in sludge. I decided to take off the heads and sure enougfh, it had a blown headgasket. So now, I sent it off to be rebuilt and should have it back in a week or two.

Good news is that I will have a brand new motor when this is all done. Also, I am getting new turbo manifolds, crossover and down pipe fabbed up while I am waiting. When I finally get it all back together, it will be better than ever.

In the meantime though, I bought a new toy - 2008 G37 that will be here tomorrow! They already have a twin turbo kit for it that is putting down 585 rwhp on the stock block. Can't Wait!!

585 rwhp in a G37! :jaw drop:

having your motor rebuilt...

Did you get all stock internals again with the new rebuild or did you upgrade? Seeing how you blew a rod in the old setup makes sense to get high strength rods and such?>> curious

I was seriously considering it, but decided to go with all stock bottom end. I am just going to turn down the boost and keep it at 6 lbs on the low setting and 10-12 lbs at the top. That will keep it in bounds of what the rods and pistons can take day to day.

.

during your consideration, what did you find to be the cost difference? Was it a lot? Between stock and upgraded? You also mentioned just stock on the bottom end, does that mean you upgraded your pistons and such on the top?

Cost for a fully built bottom end (crank, rods, pistons, rings, bearings etc..) was about $3000. Head work would have been another $2000 plus $300 for gaskets and ARP head bolts.

A fully remanufactured all stock long block only runs me $2000.
