Blown. Front. Diff.

Think about it... LSD requires spinning... that can hook up all of a sudden an break stuff. Doing the same with a locker will break stuff as well, but you are much less likely to have uncontrolled wheel spin in the first place. If rocky terrain is what you normally traverse, then fully locked might be a better solution, whereas you may be more protected against drive train damage with an LSD in the mud where spinning is required. Your truck and your call... but be sure to conduct exhaustive research. Replacing a CV takes 20 minutes on the trail, and you can get one with a lifetime warranty from O' Reillys ;) Replacing a front diff is very difficult on the trail and quite expensive, comparatively.

OTOH, an LSD in front with a selectable rear locker will get you through anything reasonable, and you wil find that 1st gear is plenty low to crawl up the tough stuff. The slush box makes this quite an easy process, just be sure to learn your truck and "listen" to its ques... don't go too fast... it will not want to... don't go too slow... your tranny will get hot a bothered. :D

I agree.

If he doesn't let uncontrolled wheel spin happen with the Tru Trac he won't break anything. Drive into the obstacle using two feet and most of the time the Tru Trac works pretty good.

Exactly my point... why not a selectable locker? If you are worried about front stress on a lip... leave it open and bump up. You would also have the option to lock up the front and crawl, without having to play the momentum game with two feet. Just sayin'

If he broke his front diff when it was open, he will break one with an LSD...

IMHO that break was all driver error.

I agree that driver error played a part, but certain modifications would have made the breakage avoidable. After reviewing the video, I would say something had to give... trying to scramble up a tough ledge with open diffs!

(Think I've played enough armchair QB today at this point... I was not there... I'll just leave it alone at this point :) )

Hands up all those who go offroading and push their rig to get though tough terrain and obstacles?
Keep your hands up if you have never broken/bent/scratched/ripped anything.
Ah-ha, just as I thought, just about everyone's hands went down. No matter what set up you have, or what your driving style is like, damage of some kind when offroading is inevitable. As sure as the sun will rise. Many times we can look back and say 'wow, I shouldn't have done it that way' but sometimes sh!t happens and something breaks. No one can accurately predict when something like an axle or diff will blow. Yes, some actions are more likely to do this than others, and in my opinion the way LINY was pushing things in the vid was setting things up in the danger zone. But seriously, his options were pretty limited in that situation. He tried the controlled approach, he tried a different line, he tried some momentum and like most of us probably would have he tried more power. He took a risk and it didn't pay off but there's no way in hell he deserves criticism because this what wheeling is all about. Give up and take a strap? Not until I've tried my best within reason. Experience plays a big factor too. Someone else might have know earlier on that the obstacle was too tough for the vehicle and gone the bypass or taken a strap, but somewhere along the line you have to learn this stuff and a lot of the time it takes breakage for this to happen.

I say hats off for giving it your all, and next time you'll be able to recognize a bad situation and things will be different. :)

Next time he'll be locked, geared and trippin on LSD in the front. But seriously, I completely agree techno, live and learn. And break shit.

Too tough? Pfft! Never. There's no obstacle I won't try...go big or go home, I don't drive 400 miles and spend a few hundred dollars to take the bypasses, I want to push my truck. There's no shame in getting winched out, there's no shame in a broken truck. At least I tried.
As I said, I wanna see someone unlock their diffs and take on that pit. Or keep it buttoned. :rockthrow:

:iagree:
She's gonna be fricken unstoppable with the LSD/ELD combo...

I was open / open and wheeled with the skinny pedal.
Broke auto locking hub...POS anyway, switched to manual hubs.
Put Aussie in rear and WOW what a difference. Able to crawl over stuff I had to do with momentum.

Some day ..... LSD in front and I too will think I am unstoppable. Until I meet a hill, rock, etc...that stops me. Then pull winch line and keep running!

I concur, wheeling is a $$$ sport. Your gonna break stuff no matter how much $$$ you throw at it. Once you modify, you will continue to push the limits of your modifications. You will be able to walk over an obsticle you prevously had to struggle to do. Now you will find a bigger badder challange until you hit that mod. wall, then mod again.
Fun, no?

Unlock your diffs and try that pit.
I'd love to see how you'd do that differently.

I wheeled for years with a stock truck and then lifted open/open. I never broke driveline parts. I stacked and unstacked rocks. Which is what I would have done and have done in similar situations.

Don't get butt hurt about my driver error comment. I made a huge one last time out and almost rolled my rig...was saved by a group of very nice Jeepers. But I knew I screwed up big time.

I agree we all make mistakes, but thats how we learn.
Mine is in my avatar which almost cost me alot of damage.

Haha, I was right behind you on that run and I thought you were gonna roll for sure! At one point it was teetering and looked like you had a 50/50 chance of going on your side or back on your wheels and you were lucky. My favorite was when Pikeman said "I'll bet he left a little brown starfish on his seat!" LOL!

That break sounded really ugly and I'm sorry I missed hearing it in person...but I'll be back up there in a week or so...so try to have it all fixed by then!:jk:

Nope..

It COULD be considered drivers error because the driver was.. DRIVING..

However there really is no way around it, his back tires were tracking, his front tire was slipping, if he gave it more gas his back two tires would give him more force up the hill but the freespinning wheel will also move faster.

If he gave it LESS pedal he would simply roll down the hill. The point is to make it UP.

Wouldn't have happened if it was in 2wd at the time of the break, but he wouldn't have made it up that far in 2wd.

Yes it was fun,and scary.I think I was more scared of damaging my truck than myself.Made for great pictures and a good story though.
