I've not lost one (knock on wood). First thought is that a spike/surge would have caused it, but that should have taken out the cable modem first.
Has it been the same cable connected to the cards that blew? Maybe it's flaky.
I have all my comm gear behind a small commercial-grade UPS to be sure that it's all protected. The ethernet cable runs through the USP, too, so the gears is a bit more isolated from the cable modem.
