Blown NIC port

Have any of you lost a NIC due to your connection to a cable modem? Recently I lost another (laptop), that is two in the last 3+ years. common?? Both were older machines (7+ years), still I think it's a bit odd. curious. thanks guys. (Charter Cable 10 GB Internet)

I've not lost one (knock on wood). First thought is that a spike/surge would have caused it, but that should have taken out the cable modem first.

Has it been the same cable connected to the cards that blew? Maybe it's flaky.

I have all my comm gear behind a small commercial-grade UPS to be sure that it's all protected. The ethernet cable runs through the USP, too, so the gears is a bit more isolated from the cable modem.

On the lappy, I had just plugged in to a Ethernet wall jack and the ThinkPad immediately said high voltage on the USB. Nothing in the USB at the times. Then it showed cable unplugged. I unplugged it and tried it at the actually modem. Thinkpad was down for 6 months. A D-Link router controls all rooms in the house. Some of my APCs have cable protection on them, just need to switch a few around and make some patch cords for the modem. . just curious if this is a known problem.

Power spikes in the Ethernet line can cause that. I've had it happen to customers who do not have their stuff hooked up to a good surge protector. If it is constantly happening with your modem, call up Charter and tell them your issue, they will probably just send a replacement modem.
