bobbed / flat deck 3rd gen.

So, in the spirit of getting in deeper when you're already in over your head, has anyone ever seen or helped create a bobbed 3rd gen?

Right now I've got my hands on a donor vehicle that I was originally planning on stealing front clip / suspension etc. from and fixing my vehicle that was involved in an unfortunate incident...

But after thinking about it a bit, it seems a bit criminal to steal like 10% of the parts off this and consign the rest to the mercy of the wreckers.

My intended use of the vehicle is to drive less than 5km from my house, for recreation purposes and I don't really need rock solid reliability or a vehicle thats particularly great at highway speeds....The donor has cruise control which would be awesome because the entirety of the drive is on a rough ass dusty road with a ton of pedestrians and going 15km/h is preferred.

Every one of my friends has tried to talk me out of it but maybe I can find some friends here to cheer me on and give me some advice. Seems like the thing to do, when life gives you a smashed 4runner at the end of its life, give it a victory lap !!!



I will be working on fixing up my original 4runner in the meantime, taking the time to do it right, and using my bike or the (gag) volvo to get to work in the meantime.

There's somebody on here who is currently chopping his. I don't thinks it's bobbed. go search frontier4x4 on instagram. He has a chopped/bobbed/sas 3rd gen. Great build.

Thanks for the links, I hadn't had much luck with google image search and appreciate you helping me find those.

Don't really like the bobbed look, I have a smashed rear door frame/body and I'm kind of glad I'll get to see what a flat deck will look like.

For the OP. You won't find much here for folks that are looking cutting up their 4Runners. If you are planning on wheeling it (and it sounds like you are) then I don't see anything wrong with it cutting it up. I am glad I did mine. One piece of advice though is to cage it if you cut it, as you have no idea how strong the body will be once it has been compromised by cutting it to shit.

lol Yeah. I didn't want to drill and bolt it to the shop floor because I am renting my shop. I tried the hitch attachment but there wasn't enough room to clear the truck. So I welded a 5/8" plate I had laying around to the rear bumper and bolted the JD2 to it. Yeah it was a pain in the ass but well worth it.

The funny thing is after having no real mechanical problems with the vehicle I pushed it out and on the way back into the garage it didn't want to engage in drive. ahaha now i guess the real work begins.

Still going to chop it down so its not boxed at the rear, true flat deck.

Have a pretty sweet idea for the tail lights / bumper....Losing the rear seats but keeping a little area that will be framed in with 1.25" tubing.

The sunroof overhang is staying, but will be shortened by about a foot that I left overhanging now so that I can try to wrap the sheet metal around the structure I build underneath.

ta ta for now, time to hit the tube bender !
