Body mount rub

Hey everyone, has anyone tried to just grind back the edge of the body mount were the tire rubs without doing a full chop and reweld? I was thinking if I just shave the edge back a little bit it will hold me over until I get back to the shop to have it done properly.

I don't think that would work too well because it is hollow so you'd be cutting all the same. You could do just barely and see, but I'd just chop if I were you. Keep us posted. I'm curious.

I paid $200 to have the Body Mount chopped and boxed. They sprayed it with primer and removed a bit of the plastic. Much to their credit, several body shops refused to do it. Join a local 4x4 club and I bet some of the members have a 4x4x business.

If you grind away enough to make a difference you have done the chop part of the job. All you would then need is to add the plate back in and the welding part done. Many chop and do not box back in, leaving the area open.
Note: the body mount is super hard high-strength steel, attempting to grind away the amount that needs to be removed will not be a pleasant experience. I would bet that you give up before you complete even one side.
Get yourself a few cut off blades and do it right.

Don't get me wrong, I will bring it in to have it done properly. It's just going to be a little while. I could pretty easily cut it back. I just can't weld the new piece on. So I was thinking if I just took a little off it would help with everyday driving a bit in the mean time.

Why do you think you need a BMC. Most people don't really need it. What tire wheel combo are you running?

I've got nitto terra grappler 285/70/17 and some sort of American racing wheels which were installed by the dealer prior to me buying the 4Runner. So they wouldn't of been my first choice but will do for awhile. The dealer also had on some sort of spacer lift which I wasn't happy with so I replaced that with OME medium duty springs and added aftermarket UCAs. The shop who don't d it for me was great and did a laser alignment. The 4Runner drives and handles much better then previously so I really couldn't be happier. They said for $300 they will do BMC. Which isn't to bad, I just can't get back there to do it for awhile. Here she is

And you're sure it's rubbing on the body mount and not something else? Do you have a picture of wear marks on the metal?

The specs on the rims are key to knowing if you need a BMC or not. Just glancing at it... You should be able to align your way out of the rub. More positive caster should do the trick, but hard to say if the truck will allow that (they are all a little different). I would take it back and see if they can squeeze another degree or two of positive out of it. The more the better 4+...(ignore the recommended factory specs for caster which I think is 2-4) Small changes make a big difference in clearing the body mount.

If the rims are too wide or have too little backspacing you will need the BMC. Cutting the body mount without welding is fine... Boxing it is the right way to go, but it will hold up just fine with only a cut... (although you usually want the person welding it to be the same person cutting it, so you don't leave them a mess) I just would not do a BMC unless it is needed it for sure. There are some possible safety concerns in a very specific type of crash. I did mine and don't worry about it, but my tires absolutely required it. 285s usually don't.

the body mount is what keeps the wheel from being driven up into the foot well. it is the difference between you keeping your legs. or not.
