Boiling/Bubbling Sound

Today I was driving up a fairly long hill on the way to the in-laws house. Nothing out of the ordinary other than the fact that I had a full load (four adults). My 1993 3.0 was it's usually slow and steady self up the hill. Maybe a little slower than usual which I chalked up to having so many people inside.

Now when I pulled into the inlaws driveway, I got out and heard what sounded like bubbling/boiling coming from under the hood. When I lifted the hood I looked around for the source of the sound which seemed to be coming from the coolant reservoir (I could feel the boiling vibration most there).

Keep in mind that the temperature gauge never moved from dead center the entire time nor was there anything leaking.

Any idea what this could be?

Again, 1993 3.0 with 178,000 miles.

Yup. Boiling is not as much an effect of temperature as it is an effect of pressure. The more pressure you have, the harder it is for a liquid to boil, and the less pressure, the easier. A bad radiator cap will cause loss of pressure and boiling coolant, even with no change in apparent temp.

Well that is certainly good news. I'll replace the cap and get back with results.
 
HG is another possibility, but on a 20+ yr old truck, rad cap is an easy, inexpensive place to start.
 
I remember mine doing that for about 2 years, mostly when I stopped from changing elevations - home is at 800ft, to destinations over 1500ft -, then my head gasket went.
 
Thanks for all the input folks, but I think I've had enough of this rig. When I bought it I thought I would have the time and desire to work on it when need be whether minor or major work. Turns out I have neither time or desire. :lol:

Time to put it up on Craigslist for someone with more mechanic skills and patience than I have.

If anyone is in the San Fran Bay area (I'm in Oakland). Look me up for a great deal.

I just recently dumped mine because I was getting some oil in the coolant and some exhaust bubbling in the radiator while it was running.

Either of those?

Yeah, I think that's what's happening with mine. By dumped, you mean you sold it? I'm definitely done with mine. I'm going to drive my wife's from now on because we're about to get her an Acura TL. :banana:

I don't want to promote getting rid of the yota, but my buddy has a TL with a 6-speed and it's awesome!
Good luck either way, next time around try a first or third gen Runner. :)

Yeah, my wife's current 4Runner is a 3rd gen so I'll be taking hers and she'll get the TL. We are likely getting a 2012 with the AWD.
