Buzzing Near Steering Wheel

Hello all,

We have a 2020 Trd Pro. Over the last year I have been hearing an intermittent buzzing/vibration sound in/around the steering wheel. This only happens while driving. It usually starts to ramp up over 30 mph.

I've hit and pushed on the dash and the clear gauge panel. Checked for loose stuff on the center console. When I put my hand underneath the column shroud, the vibration seems to be consistent with the buzzing - but there doesn't seem to be anything loose and rolling around from within.

The vehicle is still on its factory tires, which are routinely rotated. I think we have 46,000 miles on it.

I have been searching the internet and this issue does pop up with no single solution (bearings, differential - bang on dash real hard, new Falken tires....). The dealer said they can't hear it.

I don't think the 5th gen has a speedometer cable - but it's similar that whirring sound. It seems to happen above 45 mph - usually after I've been driving a few minutes.

Yeah it's all digital/electronic from the speed sensors. No more speedo cables.

I too have heard this noise, just started noticing it a month or so back, happens beginning at 35-40 mph or so, but not feeling it in the wheel at all.

Check to see if your outside door molding is loose. I had the same problem on a 2005 and it took me awhile to figure out what it was. The wind was making it vibrate.

Hard for me to tell if it's the general rumbling sound in the video or something else. If it's a light buzzing sound, my 2019 has a slightly loose plastic piece on the underside of the driver-side mirror, toward where it mounts to the truck. It will buzz in the wind. I found this by lightly tapping the underside of the mirror mount.

Does the problem go away if you are in 4WD? It does not sound like the same problem but there is a known issue with the needle bearing on the driver side of the front diff that should be ruled out. If the behavior changes when in 4WD then it would be worth looking at that needle bearing.

Hey, maybe give this a shot: push down on the area where the dashboard meets the windshield. If the buzzing gets quieter, that’s probably the culprit. Super easy check.

i had a buzzing sound due to the left plastic piece on the steering wheel with the controls on it.

I have to press down on the top part of it when i drive or it will buzz. Plastic and metal rubbing. I got use to pressing down on that part of the steering wheel when i drive so it doesnt buzz or when it buzzes.

I have the same sound from low speed, driving through parking lots, and a long left handed off ramp I drive it reverberates through the whole turn (1/2 mile). It absolutely annoying, sounds like thin metal buffeting, or vibrating at a certain frequency.

Same issue 2016 TRD Pro, happens low speed driving through a smooth parking lot, and a long left handed off ramp consistantly,(over 1/2 mile). Sounds like a reverberation, or slight thin metallic buffeting vibration at a certain frequency. 112k, Goodyear wrangler dura-trac's.
