Bolt on performance question

Are there any bolt on performance parts worth putting on a tired 3.4l?

Looking for torque mostly for turning bigger tires easier and towing a light trailer.

I assume a snorkel doesn't do anything, headers? Full exhausts? I know there are super chargers out there which might be an option but current engine has 205k mikes so I'm not throwing supercharger money into it.

Or just live with the insane reliability, slow stock engine.

Supercharger is the only bolt on part that will add enough tq that you can actually notice when turning big tires or towing. Next would be a nice regear to match the tires your running.

Many have supercharged over 200k miles. But spending $3K+ on a new SC is costly and to get the most out of it you need to add even more parts to take full advantage of the SC.

Let's do GEARS AND SUPERCHARGER!!!!
Really, I've got my 35s ordered. Then my gears, where I was pretty convinced I wanted 5.29s due to where I'm at and my driving habits. But now as time goes by and I keep looking at pics like Utah and my house is now empty of kids..... What if I move down there? I could settle with 4.88 gears and get a SC? So many decisions.....

210k miles on my supercharger, installed from the dealer a 0 miles. Doesn't add a ton of torque, mostly HP. But makes towing a breeze. Very gentle on the engine since it only runs at 7 PSI max.

Headers will do a little bit on a stock engine but the cost of the install pretty much will keep you from ever doing. I did it, and paid handsomely for it. Other than that, no there's no real bolt-on performance mods. An intake or the deck plate will add a little bit but it's not like you'll notice the difference of just one. Would take multiple mods to start to get there.

However... once you add a supercharger for forced induction the window is wide open. I have a smaller pulley with methanol injection, looking to put in larger injectors and fuel pump plus piggy back, also looking into custom cams. My target is over 280 whp (330 crank) and 260+ lbs. tq.

not saying the SC is bad at 200K+ im saying I can not justify $3k on a SC for a motor with 200K+ miles on it.

Nothing wrong with 200K on these motors. I just hit that in mine. I see guys put them on at 250K. Guys have 300+ on them. Granted, I wouldn't try to get 500hp out of it, and do 120mph everywhere I go, but if the engine has a strong maintenance history behind it and it's been taken care of, it shouldn't be a problem.

I've been thinking more and more about it happening to mine in a few years, and for sure before I do, I'll make sure my engine has a good compression test \ leak down test, and anything anyone smarter then myself advises I should do. I already know I'm not looking to roast my tires. I just want that little extra bump to help with the extra weight and such.

I did an exhaust for the sound, and my stock one rotted out...
no real performance noticed, but i like the way it sounds.

i slapped a cone filter on it, which sounds sweet, but its not great for "mudden" or river crossing.

general upkeep helps allot though. new plugs and wires would be good, new fuel filter too. start there and then do intake and exhaust.

aside from that, youre looking at new gears, or FI. either way, its gets real expensive real quick.

its not the vehicle for speed or accel. the 4th gen would be better suited for that.

Sounds like a regear would be your best bet. And that's ruling out a SC because of the cost and headers because of the pain (as well as I don't think you're going to get enough from them for what you're looking for).

good point, I bought mine used for $1500 and it was crashed atleast twice from what I can tell, had a heater valve issue and the coolant temp gage was wonky when I bought it. I did oil change and timing belt / water pump change when I got it just to be sure that was good to go before

One day I should do a leak down test just to see what I have going on but old roommate / independent Toyota technician buddy did all the work and said everything looks pretty good just don't think I can throw that kind of money at it right now

All mentioned posts are correct. Make sure you're using top tier gas and maitenance: spark plugs, maybe a new set of spark plug wires/boots if you're still on the original. Everything short of a SC will be potatoes in gains though.

Having tried both of these things firsthand, I can say that IMO gears are a better use of money when you have the larger tires.

A supercharger masks the problem by adding power on top of bad gearing, so your RPMs will still be off and the transmission will still hunt for gears on the highway. Power to the wheels will still end up being close to stock.

Regearing will return the truck to stock power figures at the wheels by eliminating the mechanical leverage lost by larger tires (fyi 4.88s with 35s is very close to stock ratio on 31s). The rpm vs transmission gear will be corrected and the vehicle will drive properly again.

just my $0.02

I would have to agree, I don't have a video but I did a head to head run. Ran my buddy sc w/7th injector kit 4.10, I have just 4.88 gears same size tire 285s he only a fender from me. Which honestly I think he spend more on that setup then my gearing.

Gearing will Definitely come. For the last 15 years ive done a lot of off road desert racing and prerunner type stuff with trucks and know the benefits of gearing and tire size.

only going to be putting 33's on it right now but if I step up to 35's I know gearing is a must and if it ever becomes what I am hoping it becomes over the next few years gearing and a supercharger are probably going to happen.

thanks for the replies guys

Seems like for me my thoughts after reading posts

intake - not going to happen will probably do a snorkel
Headers - buy them if I want to spend the money and the time to install my self, but do not expect much
Exhaust - meh, don't expect much but more noise
gearing - best bang for buck
Supercharger - if you want noticeable power increase but also $3K+
