bolt stuck and wont free up

I went to install a tow package but when I tried to loosen the bolts that were in the way (holding on the rear factory tow hooks) they would not budge. I tried to PB Blast them with no luck. after that I tried an impact wrench with still no luck. I really don't have the money to have them cut off. Any advice?

spray with PB blaster for a couple days and try again. If not bring it to any mechanic store and have them take it off for you. i think when i had to do it..i brought it into a used tire mechanic with air tools and asked to take them off for 5 bucks a piece...

yeah X2 on taking it in to a shop. sometimes they just have the right touch. I had a shop take some off for me for free. well... i bout them some lunch for doing it. but yeah

You just need some leverage. Get a breaker bar or even a pipe to add some length to your wrench or socket. That with PB blaster should get the job done.

I always have a pipe a couple feet long to break loose bolts. Make sure to use a 6 point socket.

Dont be stingy with the PB blaster. Sometimes you have to spray then go get a beer, spray again, go get a sandwich. ETC. PB is GREAT stuff. With a 2-3 foot breaker bar, or pipe you should be able to yank that sucker off with a few good cuss words.

Tried the breaker bar idea and it didn't go so great.. Long story short does anyone know what craftsmens warranty policy of broken ratchets is? Haha

As a matter of fact, yes.

Take it to any Sears, they will exchange it for you for free.

If you used your breaker bar, how did you break your ratchet? Never put a pipe on a ratchet, they will break, even Snap-On or S-K. They can even break without a cheater pipe. A breaker bar is a different animal and is made for breaking bolts loose. But if it is really stuck, you need a 3/4" drive bar and socket. Then you break the bolt instead of the wrench (for any bolt on a 4Runner).

I read Sears is starting to welch on that lifetime guarantee.

No one has suggested heat yet? propane torch it...

should come off no problem if you pb blasted it

and yeah, breaker bar is a plus

Try this!

Find a propane or other torch

Get one of your GF or wifes candles

Heat up the bolt with the torch

Touch the bolt/nut (whatever it is you want loose) with the candle.

Use your breaker bar to loosen the bolt.


The combination of heat and wax will allow the threads of the bolt to coat with wax, and ease removal. I read about this method in Truckin magazine and used it when trying to dissassemble my old struts, saved me from having to replace them!

Take it to your local shop! Big O' Tires did it for free. I walked in, said my impact broke and I needed 4 nuts taken off and they said pull up to the gate and we'll pop 'em off for ya.
