A few weeks ago my aftermarket radio went silent for a couple days, and I figured it was the JBL amp acting up. I got a replacement amp to install, but I've always liked the storage option on non-JBL models, so decided to try that project instead.
I ended up getting the storage shelf and a rear quarter trim panel from a junk yard for 80 bucks. The shelf was a direct bolt on. Surprisingly the quarter panel didn't really fit that great with the upper panel, so I ended up installing my old JBL one. I did cut free the subwoofer panel cover so I could access the storage stuff. It snugly stays but doesn't work exactly the same as the storage cover.
Using the JBL panel was better IMO because I could fit more stuff in there than with the other panel. But its just the body skin in there, so I'll probably install some soundproofing in there to add some dampening.
I did have legendary t4r member J.A.'s cargo box mod, and fit pretty much everything I had in there in this little hidden compartment.
Since I disconnected the sub, I did have to bypass the JBL completely. I had to run new speaker wire, and I used a metra kit 71-1761 to run the wire to. I then used a JBL connector adapter to connect the power, illumination, grounds, and all the other applicable wires to the metra adapter to make a plug-and-play harness for my radio.

At first I did miss the center dash channel, but have gotten used to it since. Who knows, I may go back, but pretty pleased so far. Just thought I'd share. I will say, I had to cut a hole in the top of the non JBL trim panel because the amp harnesses were way too big to tuck away.
