Bolting something under the seat

Hi. I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong forum. I don't work on my car at all (except windshield wipers and oil: ) but I do have a question. Perhaps I should go to the dealership, but they will be closed by the time I get there and I suspect I might get an answer here. I have a 2004 4Runner SR5 4WD.

I bought a Response Technology Inc SafeBox to store stuff in. It comes with a sleeve I can bolt down and the actual box slides in and out of the sleeve. The box can be locked by itself or it can be locked into the sleeve. I bought an extra sleeve for my car.

It fits perfectly under the driver's side seat. I don't have the fancy electronic seat adjustments, so that space is clear.

So... how should I install it? Better to bolt it to the floor or onto the seat? What bolts? If the floor, will it have to go through the bottom of the floor to a nut on the exterior? Is this even a smart idea or should I find another place to put it?

I'd use 4 1/4" Stainless steel sheet metal screws - may 3/4 - 1" inch long. Rather than drill thru carpet which can catch the carpet threads and create an ugly pull - I'd use an awl or ice pick to poke a hole. Be sure to check there are NO wires or hoses in the way. Wouldn't hurt to apply a dab of silicon to seal it. Great way to carry personal protection - the 9MM kind.

Does the 04 have the heating ducts that run under the front seats to the back? That would be my only concern.

As for the personal protection, I prefer to carry on my person. But the safe is a great place to secure it when you can't (which is not very often around here).
