bonnets and pads and ro-buffers

Can someone clear the air on this topic for me...

What bonnets are used during the normal steps of a detailing process? Say you wish to apply product (polish, paint cleaner, or wax) and/or remove it using a random orbit buffer. (and the buffer came with no instructions).

For example, you might buy a 3-pack of bonnets: 1 is thick, kinda wooly, 1 is microfiber and thin, and 1 is microfiber but with a rubberized backing. Which when?

Also, what is the best use of a ROB? is it better suited to help you apply or remove products? For example, a polish (step 2 from Meguiars) needs to be applied then removed pronto - there isn't enough time to switch pads, so which step is best completed with the ROB?

Thanks, I have checked out some of the major detailing sites. I *think* that the thickest pads are for application, and the thinner ones are for removal. Once again, I've been doing it wrong.
