Borla and volant on 04 Question.

I have an 04 V8 and both of these Products are much more expensive then the 05+ versions.
Can I buy the 05 borla and 05 volant cai for my 04 V8 and have them work? Why would they be any different and what would be the issues stopping me from using the 05 versions?

Thanks

as far as i know, most parts are the same for 03-05, at least it seemed that way when i order things for my 06. but someone stated in a similar thread, that in 05 they went to vvti & from 3 cats to 4 & changed the way the pipes are routed, pm JB maybe he can tell you better.

Can someone explain to me more about vvti, how would this affect the them from working in a 04? If there routed the same why wouldnt they work?

The thing is, do you know for a fact it's the same? You are talking about Bolt-on mods, and if Toyota added the VVTI in 05, are you positive the set up remain unchanged? I honestly don't know either but I would be 100% positive before I made the purchase. Even then, some places might not take returns because of opened items or failed installs. Again, make sure you are getting something that can be done, or at least returned and exchanged. Who knows you might save some cash trying it your way.

i only know that vvti is "variable valve timeing " i believe it has changed some since it was first put in the 4runner. it changes the cam timing for more power, im not sure if that means different heads or not, but there are mech. parts involved, but suppositly, its the # of cats used & the way the pipes are routed. in the 05 compared to the 04, that makes up for the difference in $. i assume the pipes are bent at different or more angles & the sections have different lengths so things wont lineup/fit as it should. maybe it could be modifed to fit, but that would cost $ too, what kind of $ difference are you talking about? 75 -100? id say, do some more searching for a possible better price, & get the correct setup for your year. goodluck & let us know what happens.

Thanks for the replies,

Chaz,
Thanks that clarifies it a little bit more for me,
To be honest I didn't really no what the heck vvti was
I just assumed the pipes were routed the same, Didn't see why they would be different, but i guess adding the vvti caused them to change the design of them.
I think i'm going to end up going with a gibson exhaust.

if you wanted the borla because of the dual exits, i think flowmaster might have just come out with one, heck, you could just get the gibson & have a muffler shop pipe it to duals, there are guys who have done this. good luck

Borla and Volant

You will have to let me know your opinions on the Borla + Volant setup. I've heard K&N, but someone said there was a concern for the kit being too wide open and a higher risk of water ingestion from below the area around the wheel well. From what I saw, it looked like the Volant had a more enclosed setup. I honestly can't remember if that was true. Last time I saw my 4runner was in March.

As for exhaust, I don't have as much insight except for whoever can work with XREAS, and not removing the spare tire. I want _performance_ rather than noise, would like side exit as opposed to rear, oh yeah and a CARB stamp...stupid California regulations. I've had friends that tossed the spare tire for a custom exhaust and said they'd just call AAA. Changing tires is Man's stuff. Calling AAA is for my Asian Fiancee. I think the Borla kit offers what I'm looking for, its also the most expensive option.

Unbiased opinions, or if you could do it all over again?

the K&N is a WET filter, as is the old style volant. some people have had the oiled filters foul up the MAF, i for 1, which then needs cleaning. if you get the volant, order it with the new Dry filter. thats what i changed over to. it works great for me. the k&n is much louder than the volant, since the volant is in a box, the k&n uses just a shield & is left open.first i replaced the old filter with the new dry ,straight thru, then i have modded the box to completly shut it off from the engine bay hot air (capped off front, sealed around intake tube, ran coupling out thru fender & sealed) now it is a real CAI. the k&n also draws hot air in. yes, i would do it exactly the same way again.

Teqeeler & Mr. Banks:

The Gibson is a quality product. Installed mine in Feb myself and am very pleased with about 8K miles on it. If your looking for performance and a civil rumble this is it. Dual exhaust is for coupes!.. and apparently Honda Pilot's. Actually it looks good on the T4R's and I'm thinking of doing what chaz mentiond as far as having a muffler shop make mine dual but worry about getting more noise than I want. Anyone else noticing the ridiculous number of factory dual exhaust apps??? Does the Prius come with a dual yet? I digress... love the Gibson.

chaz:

You're killing 2 birds with one stone for me here. Where exactly did you feed your front coupling? U do any cutting? That's bothered me since the day I put my volant in but couldn't figure where exactly I'd want to run the open intake to. Any pics would be great. Also, do you have the product number for that Volant Dry filter. A year + now with the Volant oil filter and no MASS problems but I don't want to wait till it happens.

i just capped off the front opening with rubber pvc cap,i thought about running pipe/hose, but with so many bends youd have to make, i dont think its worth it. but i widened the hole in the fender 1/2 & ran a rubber coupling thats used for pvc sewer pipe out, threw fender, it fits snug enough so no chalk or anything else is needed. if you ever reinstall the stock box, you wont see it. 2 black plastic folgers coffee can lids , 1 inside box, 1 outside, & foam insulation were used to seal the inlet tube to TB, thats the important one to help keep the hot engine bay air out. the volant dry filter ( universal round) draws airs from the front/top only, & that lines right up to the box inlet hole. all this makes a pretty good seal & the now the volant a true cai . my STP dyno says these mods really help . to me , it makes the volant look like it should. you also wont hear the loud sucking sound like the k&n in case you dont want that. the dry filter is $, it cost 10 bucks for the other stuff. by the way,i went about a year after the install before the wet volant filter fouled the maf, which i replaced with a jet hiflo one,(could of just cleaned it, but didnt want to chance it) the engine can just cut off while driving.(yes that happened) but there are some guys that never develope the fouling. pm me if your interested in pics. the filter is the Powercore, 3.5 x 7 x 6 round, i think # 61510, but when you click on it, make sure.
