Borla installed, air filter?

I installed my borla today (see info here ).
I got it from Tad at Courtesy Toyota. It came with an air filter which is rechargeable/non-disposable. The sticker that came with it to put on the air box has the Borla logo on it but I didn't see air filters on Borla's site. Does anyone know who makes it and what recharge kit I need to use when it comes time?

This is funny. I emailed Tad, he told me k&n. I called Courtesy and got Eric, he tells me TRD. After pulling it out and looking over the filter I see the aFe marking on the side. I emailed Tad to let them know what they are sending out in order to squelch any confusion or disinformation.

Go with the TRD/AFE one if you must...though I might suggest that if you are looking to spend that kind of cash on a filter, you might as well buy a whole CAI and at least get some performance benefit out of it cause the filter alone isnt going to provide JACK.

I have the same filter... it is the aFe filter, which I hear is who makes TRD filters, therefore they're the same, minus the TRD logo. The design is similar to K&N in that they're cleaned, oiled, and resusable. The difference is the size of the pleats in the filter. Search for aFe's website and you'll see their claims about how they're better. I don't know if it makes a difference since I've heard even the cold air kits for the 4Runner don't do much, but it's nice to research what you're putting under your hood.

AFE does make the TRD filters. There is a big difference in material quality between the K&N and the AFE/TRD filters. The AFE filters are not only made with better materials, they fit and seal much better.

Yes, it's for the 06 V8 4Runner, so it will fit. You can get it from your dealership (they sell it as a TRD filter) or you can get it from Courtesy Toyota in Florida, or just do a search online for aFe filters, then buy from them.

I've been looking for a cat-back but am shy about the Borla as it appears to go under the spare to get to the left discharge. I can't afford to lose any clearance back there.


Also I've seen some kicking about the Flowmaster as causing a power loss.

True, the Borla doesn't have quite as much clearance as the stock exhaust, but I don't think it's that big of a difference. I installed the system myself and tucked it up nice and tight, so there's not much hanging below the spare.

As for the Flowmaster, the power loss could be attributed to the fact that you have to have a custom bent system fab'd up by an exhaust shop. Since most exhaust shops don't do mandrel bending and don't have the advantage of a dyno-tuned design, you're not getting the best system for power. The Borla is mandrel bent, is stainless, and is designed specifically for the 4Runner. I'm happy with mine and would recommend it highly. Based on other members' reviews, I would also recommend the Magnaflow system for the same reasons.

I dont know if this has been brought up or not, but you must use caution when you clean and re-oil this type of filter. You only want to use the amount of oil necessary, as excess will be sucked through the filter and can mess up some air flow sensors upwind of the filter. I dont know how susceptible the t4r is to this problem, but on some vehicles (99-06 GM fullsize trucks) it is almost a gauranteed occurence that your MAF will go south faster than a pack of Jewish retirees if it gets slathered in oil.

The same with BMW....actually its the same with any oiled gause filter. AFF just introduced new dry filters.

I still have the same problem with my borla exhaust on my 05 v8 4runner. When I look under the vehicule it seems that the system is pulling to the right causing the hangers to rip off. The system starts align at first beginning at the converter, but towards the middle pulls to the right and my mechanic doesn't know why. He wants to weld another hanger to the left to align it but that shouldn't be :awais: :bash:
