Botched Powder Coating Job?

Yesterday, I picked up a C4 Lo-pro bumper from a powder coating shop in Glendale, CA . When heading home from work (bumper was in the trunk), I noticed my truck smelt like spray paint, making me think they must have done some touch ups with a rattle can prior to me picking it up.

Today, when taking it out of the 4Runner, the colors on the face of the bumper don't seem to be consistent. When inspecting closer, I see black color is not consistent, some blemishes, but most concerning are areas where I can almost see steel (i.e., welds, gussets, corners).

When comparing the powder coating on the bumper vs. my Gobi and Pelfreybilt sliders, the quality doesn't compare.

The bumper isn't going on today, unfortunately.

Is this a botched powder coating job, or an I being overly critical?

yeah it looks like they rattle canned the entire bumper. i would take it back for a refund or repaint.

Bad powder coating

Yes, bad paint job. Powder coating requires an electric charge on the steel piece. The paint sticks better and more uniformly when it's done right. I'm not an expert on it but that's the basic concept.

Try to read something about powder coating if you do go back. If you go back, ask to see the shop and process. Look for the right equipment to do the job correctly.

I consider powder coating to be a good primer coat. It scrapes off too easily, even when done right. I always add a couple of coats of hand painted Rustoleum paint.

Where did you get the bumper? Like you, I'm in Pasadena. Is this a local supplier?

I see a lot of powercoated parts at my work. We get enclosures that can look like your interior surfaces if it’s not spec’d as an A or B surface. However, the external finish quality shown here would be rejected hands down.

You either pulling everyone's leg here and making up the story about powder coating gone wrong or your powder coat company is a ripoff. There is nothing on your pictures that has proper powder coating it looks more like a 3M spray can bed liner applied really thin. Powder coating will look smooth even in flat finish such as:

I spoke with the owner at the powder coating company, and he said he's going to re-do it. The company has a high rating, with multiple reviews on Yelp and it seems he wants to keep it that way.

I'll be swinging by later today, giving him a few different options.

1) Fix the job, after checking out his equipment, and having him commit to a quality job... if not the review will reflect
2) Have him clean my bumper and refund the purchase

I do have doubts that the majority of his work is with rims... so he's likely either lacking experience or proper equipment.

The bumper is from C4 Fabrication, bought it in their group buy last year. The powder coating company is in Glendale. Do you have any experience with a local powder coater?

This is a rattle can job to me.

You'll want to sandblast again it and get it powder coated. Hopefully you can get your money back.

That is bad enough I don't know if I'd be giving them a second chance. That is like asking a contractor to put in a new bathroom and they put a porta potty out back instead.

I got my sliders powder coated in a textured black and it's definitely not bedliner. I looked at a sample at the shop before dropping them off. They turned out great and the texture isn't nearly as noticeable as what's on your bumper. This job looks more like the rustoleum bedliner I sprayed on my satoshi grill for my 3rd gen.

Ya that's pretty bad... looks like spray paint to me.

I rattle canned my sliders and they look a lot better than that, you need a lot of coats to get it to look nice... but in the areas with poor coverage they look identical to your pictures.

OP if it were me I'd ask for a full refund (if the shop is willing) and go else where.
