Bought 2000 4 runner need opinions

Hey guys,

I bought a 2000 sr5 200,000km for approximately 2000$. New brakes and a new set of tires were already done. I am kind of excited as back in the day I had a 98 which drove well until someone t boned me.

As of now I am Ordering new rocker panels and getting some work done to shore up the frame, probably going to repaint, and paint rims matte black.

Other than that,

I had a few questions:

1) is it expensive to put in new rug if mine is worn out, and do you guys recommend replacing seats vs ordering seat covers?

2) what service do you guys recommend getting done at 125,000 miles / 200,000 km?

3) lastly, I know a lot of people put new shocks on the ride? What do you recommend?

I realize that there is the master list for newbies, but I was interested in real time opinions vs a static document.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Just get some weathertech liners to put over the carpet.
Timing belt, water pump, drive belts, if not done before.
Radiator, thermostat, toyota coolant.
Toyota lower ball joints, probably inner/outer tie rods too.
Fuel filter.
Spark plugs and wires.
Clean MAF/throttle body if looks gross.
Possibly steering rack bushings.
Front/rear diff fluid, transfer case fluid.
Grease drive shaft.
Air filter.
Oil change, filter.
Check battery and connectors.

If the timing belt/water pump hasn't been done i would recommend replacing them, the 3.4's are non-interfierence motors tho'. First thing i do when i buy a new to me vehicle is change all the fluids, both diffs. transfer case, engine oil ect... Another thing that i've found worn on both of my 4runners and my 04 tacoma is the rack & pinion bushings. I replaced them with poly bushings from Energy Suspension, made a big improvement in the feel of the steering. These trucks are known for lower ball joints failing, if they haven't been replaced replace them with oem toyota bj's. Your in the right place when it comes to 4runners, alot of good info here. Just use the search bar and take the time to read. Congrats on your purchase!

I seen a really cool site that offers a Vinyl floor cover that replaces the factory carpet that looked pretty good its cheaper than weathertech I would think but u have to pull the interior

I'd say everyone here is spot on with the maintenance part.

I'll add that I would pretty much only go for Bilstein shocks - the tundra ones will make it ride so much better - even if you are not lifting it.

For the carpet, I bought the complete ACC kit to replace my ugly stained brown carpet - I bough it in charcoal since I hate brown carpet. the kit was about $260 shipped. you can get it for around $150 if you do not want the rear cargo area carpet and wheel well carpet.

Thanks guys. If I am not raising the ride what number of the blitstein shocks should I get. I know people that have raised the ride have gotten 5100's.m

If I wasn't lifting it, I would STILL get the Tundra 5100's. Takes away the mushy feel and should work perfectly fine at stock height since the fronts are adjustable.

I bought brand new interior carpet from stockinterior.com for 140 bucks shipped to my door. Well worth it. My interior was trashed when I bought it, so I gutted it and started to replace parts. Also got Katzkin leather to replace my seat covers.

Thanks guys. One last question:

I am looking into:
1. Bilstein 5100 shocks
2. New radiator, to eliminate the possible milkshake problem
3. New timing belt, water pump and drive belt.
4. Spark plugs and wires
5. Lower ball joints

What do you think is should cost roughly. I looked on rock auto for parts, but what do you think the labour cost should be? Based on your previous experience?

Couple things:

- when you do the rad, get an external tranny cooler and bypass the one in the new rad entirely.

- when you do the timing belt job, do the front crank seal and cam seals as well as the valve cover gaskets, spark plug grommets, rear cam plugs and the PCV grommet as well as the valve cover bolt grommets.

- consider also sending the injectors out for service while the intake is off anyway ( wish I did this because I had to do it again)

- of course when the lower balljoints are being done, look at the uppers and tie rods.

- adjust steering rack pre-tensioner

- change ALL fluids ( maybe you mentioned it)

- check rear brakes for seized adjusters
