$4000 sounds like a good deal for a 4Runner here in San Diego. Most seem to go for $5K+

I figured it was a 4 cylinder... had me thrown off for a bit though lol!

Another common failure on these is the vacuum switching valve for the EGR system. Actually maybe even more common than the EGR valve itself. Also often times an these parts can pass testing and still be at fault.

I hate "throwing parts" at vehicles without going through a proper diagnosis but unfortunately that's all I can do through the forum. But ANYWAY,
Don't let him give you "oh it's fine to drive" garbage like nothings wrong.

I hope the seller takes care of you and if for some reason you wind up stuck with it as YOUR problem feel free to PM me. I'll help with what I can and I wouldn't mind sending you a MAC code reader/clearer I have that would fit in a bubble wrap mailer to have for a week or so. I've been trying to help out who I can here and until someone gives me a reason to otherwise I'll try my best.

FWIW if you have to order parts such as an oxygen sensor, check Amazon. They sell Denso, the original brand, for about 1/3 of any where else. It will arrive in about two days. You do know you can clear the CEL by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. right?

so far, the seller seems to be taking care of it....he cleaned the ERG on Thursday and the CEl hasn't come back on, but he says it will still need to be replaced. he got a used ERG at a local junkyard, but it didn't work, so he says he ordered parts from Toyota on Friday afternoon and will install later today.

Outside of that, the only thing I've noticed outside of the CEL / ERG valve issue, is that this thing is getting poor gas mileage - maybe 12 MPG, which seems way off for a 4cyl.

I know this is old but did this ever get resolved was kit the egr, vsv, temp sensor etc.
And what about your poor gas mileage did you resolve that is and if so what did you do?

Thank you in advance as I have the same truck 1996 white 4banger base model w/216k all original.
And am now having the same two issues any info would help
