Bought a New 4Runner today!!

Hey guys, as some of you know I currently have a 2002 4Runner with some goodies on it and have been looking for a new Tacoma or 4Runner lately.

Well after much research I decided the perfect fit would be a Sport Edition with the V8 and 4WD. It seemed as if there were NONE available in Florida and the only ones I could get were in North Carolina. So today I went to my local dealership to just look around. They had four 4Runners on the lot, three 2008 2wd v6's and one 2007 4WD V8 Sport Edition.

Sticker was 37,800 so I start talking to the guy and long story short... I sign on the dotted line at 1000 below invoice!!!

So here she is, I take delivery on Wednesday, so expect more pictures then!!

So guys and girls, what should I upgrade first?

Right now I am thinking I should wait until 15k miles to replace the air filter with a true flow and whenever I can recover a little bit of money to go ahead and put HID's in it. Other than that I plan on putting leather in it whenever I can afford to and changing out the head unit to an Eclipse AVN 6620 when they come down in price a bit.

Any other suggestions?

And I have heard that many of you are not happy with the Dunlops, can I have them changed out before I take delivery at no charge and if I can... what tire do I go to. This truck will be used ONLY for highway and city driving for the first set of tires, I have an 02 that is for the trails.

Thanks in advance!

First, congrats on the purchase.

If you can get the dealer to swap to the Michelins, that would be a big step up. I'd start there -- safety first.

Well, if this is going to be only on pavement for a while, I can reccomend the tires that came with my T4R. They are Toyo Proxes S/T. I personaly want more of an off road tire, even though these are rated good for mud and snow. They are really nice handling, smooth ride, and the runner goes where I point it even in tight aggressive turning. I really like them, but I bought a 4 wheel drive truck so that I can take it off road.

Definitely swap to some better tires. It's taking me 6 months, but I should have new ones in another week or 2.

I bet it wasn't too hard to talk them down to $1,000 below invoice, they just wanted it off their lot. I got mine in August for $32,700 but they wanted something around $38,000 for it.

How do you like it compared to your 02?

It really wasnt too difficult to talk them down to that. I might have been able to do better but didnt want to spend the rest of the evening negotiating for another 500$ off. The important thing is that I feel I got a good price for it, and I more than likely did better than the average joe to walk in there.

Compared to my 02, well its a night and day difference. Keep in mind my 02 is lifted and locked and has full skid plating on it so it drives like a truck thats been beat on for 132,000 miles.

I like the full time 4wd feature, as it rains a lot in Florida and you can never be too safe. I also like the interior as its a lot larger and I fit in it easier ( I am 6'3" and 240lbs so the 3rd gen is kinda a tight fit.

Now about the tire swap, can I get the dealer to do it for free or will I have to pay? Anyone have personal experience on this? If I complain enough will they just do it to get me to go away?

Ruffian I had those tires on my 02 when it had 20" wheels, and loved them. However since I am not rockin 20"s anymore and want to keep as much of a rugged look as possible while still having a smooth ride and good wet/dry performance I am looking for something more like the michelin xterrains.

By the way, I havent even taken delivery yet and I already ordered a set of Vent Visors for it... I can already tell this is going to be bad, now I have TWO 4Runners to drain my wallet... better get a bigger wallet!!!

Congratulations on the new 4Runner. Good luck with it.

I would start by having the dealer throw on a set of Michelins. My dealer swapped the Revos on my old truck with the stock Bridgestones for free. The Dunlops are not the best tires in the world and they don't last. What sound system did your truck come with? If you have the JBL, it may not be worth the money to swap it out. I think it sounds great! You can throw on a hitch step or Toyota skid plate to spice up the looks if you want!

it came with the 8? 10? JBL system it has the two speakers in the way back where the mirrors are on some 4runners. i dont want to replace the speakers, just the head unit with one that has navigation as my 02 has navigation and it has become a crutch.

ill try and get the dealer to swap tires for me before i take delivery.

You probably have the 10 speaker premium sounds system. You can save a few $$$ by buying a portable navigation unit.

Hey Falls, I already do love the V8!!!

As far as options it has the double decker cargo system, JBL Synthesis 10 speaker system, home link, curtain airbags ( a biggie!!), day time running lights, the 115 AC plug, and the toyoguard protection package.

I already ordered the vent visors and plan on ordering either OEM navigation or going to Eclipse for it and installing leather as soon as I recoup from this initial big hit.

The truck handles so well compared to my 02 and is just smooth and quiet, I think I'm in love :)

I like the silver as it will look REAL good once it gets tinted next week and am really happy about getting the sport edition. Im kinda sad it doesnt have a moonroof but hey, I wasnt going to wait until the end of March and pay a premium for it.

Overall its pretty much exactly what I wanted in a new vehicle, so once I personalize it to my liking, I think it will feel right at home next to my beat up '02.

I still plan on driving my '02 a bunch as I like the feel it gives me and will prob. only take the '07 out on dates and when I dont want to hear various rattles and vibrations.

It will be nice to have a spare vehicle though, as perhaps now I can finally take the '02 out of service for a month as I repair all the small things that annoy me about it finally with out having to worry about how to get places.

And now for a picture of the old and the new, maybe Wednesday I can get a picture of them side by side, but for now this will have to do.

The old

Im glad that you didnt get a tacoma like i thought you were about to! I think having a 'quiver' consisting of two 4R's would be soo sick! Nice choice on the 4wd sport v8, you sir will NOT be dissapointed.
As far as first upgrade i cannot help!

Congrats on the new truck.

Where are you located? Thats the first 4WD V8 Sport Ive seen without a spoiler (besides mine). I resorted to a special order to get mine that way- I wonder if yours was a special order as well and the buyer backed out. I wasnt aware of any region that equipped Sports that way as a standard package.

Love the silver and , love the no spoiler .

Yes , I know you have the v8 , thats why I wrote that in my post.

Runner-up you nailed the reason I got the '07 I did... Side-airbags are huge as is the AWD mode for the Florida downpours.

I have the Michellins and they work very well but I am getting some minor sidewall checking already (purchased in Sept. 6600miles on the odometer and I'm a tire rotation/pressure freak!). I haven't seen a Michellin that doesn't do this though... I don't think it's worth worrying about.

Congrats on the new ride! :bigok:

Congrats! Great looking trucks. You have best of both worlds - 3rd Gen AND 4th Gen!!

I love my 4th Gen but the 3rd Gens I think were the best looking 4Runners. It would be fantastic if Toyota made the 4th Gen looks identical to the 3rd Gen (maybe with some minor mods) and put all the 4th Gen stuff i.e. new engine(s) V6 & V8, transmission, VSC, DAC, Torsen-diff., ATRAC, side-curtain airbags etc. & 3rd row seats (optional) and keeping the rear-lockers!
