As some of you may remember from my other post, my 1996 4wd v6 limited has an auto tranny thats been slipping. I tried 2 bottles of additive but it didnt help.

I found a great deal on a 96k mi 98' sr5 v6 4wd tranny complete with tq coverter and transfer case and 6 month warranty, so i bought it today and cleaned it up. Only thing i hadnt noticed at the salvage yard was that my 4wd selecter knob has a little button on the side that you push, the new one does not. Is this a difference from 96' vs. 98' yr model, or the differnce of a limited vs. sr5? Will it still work?

One more thing...upon further inspection i noticed something else, my transfer case has a solinoid looking thing on it and the new one does not. It has the holes casted in but they dont appear to have been used.

That tranny and transfer case must have been out of an SR5 as opposed to the LTD you have. The SR5 and base models used the old J style manual 4wd shift lever, while the LTD had the push button 4wd with the straight lever for selecting 4lo and neutral, but is mainly electronically controlled. I don't think the 2 systems are compatible, though I've never tried, perhaps with some part swapping. Is there anything wrong w/ your transfer case, could you just bolt your t-case onto the new tranny and call it a day? If not I'd take it back and look for a set up from a LTD, probably pre 99 because of all the multimode stuff.

I'm seeing that someone has been in that transfer case. Notice the red silicone. That could or could not be a good thing.:runaway:

Not saying your wrong but i noticed when i did my current transmission oil pan the factory gasket sealant is pink/red. It the black stuff thats aftermarket, so im pretty sure it hasnt been opened up. Still wondering if this is gonna work. Id be 100% againsg it if i were putting a transmission with more electronics in my 4runner...but after all its the other way around.

Please keep the ideas comming, i was planning on doing this swap next week if possible.

I would take the transfer case off of your tranny and bolt it to the new(used) one and see if you could take back the other t-case. Since your T-case is computer actuated by elimintating it you might also effect other electronics or at minimum have a check engine trouble code that wont go away. If you are in Cali you wont pass smog with a check engine light active.

Im wondering if lining up and bolting back on the transfer case is hard to do. The guy at the junkyard said it was and thats why they just sell them together.

And do transfer cases ever go bad from high mileage? Its never been offroad, and 4wd engaged very few times.

Whats a low mileage sr5 transfer case worth?

Ok so i bought the tranny fluid, gasket sealant, and was on the way to buy a $20 Chilton manual when i realized its supposed to be 105 degrees for the next week. I had an overwhelming sense of "OMG i dont wanna do this". My buddy was willing to let me borrow his lift for a minimal daily rental fee but i was still dreading the job.

So i called around for quotes expecting rediculous numbers. Sure enough the first place quoted $1100...um no. I then called an off road shop and they said $690. Another call...550. Finally i made one last call and they said $400.

$400 for hours of hot manual labor in 105 degree heat and them be done in one day....priceless. Now thats a great deal coupled with getting a great deal on the tranny. Im expecting a curve ball which always seems to come my way when things are going well. Pray for me. :bigok:

Make sure you get that price quote in writing!

That sounds like a hell of a deal.
Here is a link to an FSM for an 02' so you don't have to buy that chilton.

Thank you for the links, that is why i love this forum.

So sure enough the bill was $395 with tax and shop supplies. It leaked fluid all over my garage so i got up under the truck and found one loose oil pan bolt, tried to tighten it and it kept spinning...theres that curve ball. Took it back they used a larger bolt, reused fluid(kept clean), knocked dented pan back out with hammer and sealed it up for $60! I dont know if they are hurting for labor or if its the fact their shop is right down the road from ours but for these prices its not even worth me breaking a sweat.

So the truck still hesitated (i thought it was slip) after the new transmission. What i was 100% sure was transmission slip was ignition related. A phone conversation with dad and he says he hasnt replaced the plugs/wires in 10 yrs.:upset:

Replaced plugs and wires with new OEM ones and voila problem solved. Thanks to whoever suggested it you were right. Well now i got a 90k mi tranny...and it does drive better/smoother with this one.

Funny thing is there was never a CEL. Hope this helps someone down the line.
