Bought Some Recovery Gear!

I took your guys advice and decided to buy some safe recovery gear. I bought a farm jack (Hi-lift look alike, I compared the two and for half the price the Harbor Freight one was just as tough), A Come-along rated for 8k lbs, I got two shackles (one rated for 5t and the other 3t I think), then I got a second tow strap from a friends dad rated for 50k lbs. I think I'm all set! :bigok: I'm going to take the hooks off of the little yellow strap, I'm going to keep them in the back just in case I ever need them though. And I bought the come along for emergency situations only, I understand it's not exactly safe.

Thanks, once I get some new tires I will definitely be looking into getting a winch as well as some more gear. Tires gotta come first though, mine are dry cracked and I'm worried one might blow out.
 
Good work. Are those the shackles you can put on your hitch? I want to get one of those.

How much did those straps set you back?

Which tires are you looking at?

Yeah both shackles can go on the hitch, on the front tow points, anywhere. Keep an eye on Craigslists, they are not cheap if bought new. I scalped these from my friends dad.

The 20ft 20k lb strap costs about $25, I got it for free from my grandmother out of her shed a while back. The 20ft 50k lb strap can be had for about $40, I got it for free also from my friends dad, same one I got the shackles from.

The tires I am looking at are the BFG AT KOs, I'm sold on the look! I was going to get Nitto TG's but Sears can't get Nittos and thats where I work so I'm gonna get a steal on the BFGs anyways. :bigok:

A come-along has saved me before. We actually ended up using a second to keep the back end from sliding into a tree while cranking it forward with the other. Even with the winch, I bring the come-along.

Yup, thats what saved my rear the other day! I figure I will try and use the hi lift before I use the come along, I'd be very worried of the cable snapping. Jm .02c
 
Looking good. However, I would not be so confident that anything from Harbor Freight is the same quality as other brands. It's just a Chinese replica, you get what you pay for.

good pick...BFGs blow Nittos out of the water

I understand, but like I said I did compare the two and the HF one appeared to be of the same quality minus a couple little odds and ends (like the place at the end of the jack to hook a strap, etc. )

What kind of deal are you getting on the BFGs? I've been calling around and best price I've found is right around $900 OTD, including disposal of old, mount, balance and 7% sales tax. 265/75/16.

At that price, I'll be driving on my Bridgestone Dueler H/Ts awhile longer... (they came on the car when I bought it)

Including all that, I am getting them for $776 w/ tax. Sears is having a sale on BFG's right now and I get my employee discount.
 
Recovery gear is always a must. Even down on the beach here in Kenai the hardest part is getting back OFF the beach. I've seen more then one rig sunk in the sand. I got through it with my locker and I could feel all three wheels working hard to get through it. That's why I have two pieces of treated 2x6 in the back when I go again. Just in case. Also, I want to get a small folding shovel to keep in back for those small jobs. Pick one up from any Army \ Navy store. Small, light, cheap and perfect for jobs like that.

I have a whole list of items I want to add to my recovery list, but just work is very slow now and I need shocks and springs first...

BFG's are a waste of money in my opinion. I got Hankook DynaPro all-terrain for just under $500, and they are incredible on and off the road. I have driven BFGs on 4Runners and on my old Chevrolet Z71, and the DynaPro's are better tires, flat out. Not to mention $400 cheaper. Hell, with the money you'll save, you could almost buy some new wheels.
 
i agree.. bfg's r hyped way 2 much.. i've had bridgestones and bfg's and actually like the bridgestone's better and the extra money in the pocket isn't bad either

recovery gear I carry and mandated at most sanctioned 4x4 events. Tow Strap, shackles, FIRE EXTINGUISHER, jack, and a small rachet set and spare fluids. So far have not needed them for my vehicle but have used everything on the trail for others. Extinguisher came in handy when friends battery hold down broke and started small electric fire. Wheel Smart Wheel Safe. For a mostly complete list of recommended recovery gear you can check CAL4wheel.com
 
It's always a good idea to be over prepared. It will save you more than once for sure.


Clemson, this is what you want for your hitch. There are some milled from a solid piece of steel (like my BONZ) but they are a lot more money. This forged one should work great.
