Going 67 on 294 I'm in the right lane and this Outback comes from the far left lane tothe middle lane is a half car length ahead and proceeds to make a lane change into my lane. This is the first time I've really applied the brakes and damned near went through the fricken windshield. What kind of brakes do they have on this thing? Moreover what really amazed me, was the handling characteristics while braking. I felt that I was in absolute control of the vehicle, while having to make a very aggressive manuever.

I bought the 4Runner for it's true off road capabilites in an SUV. What I did not anticipate are the extraordinary performance characteristics. It really showed me something today!!!

I understand that the 4Runner has an electric pump that activates the hydraulic brakes, with stopping power much greater than conventional vacuum assist brakes. I think that 'brake assist' also comes into play during hard braking.

I hope you wear your seatbelt. The breaks aren't bullet proof on our vehicles, however, they have great stoping power. A nice upgrade would consist of going to synthetic brake fluid and stainless brake lines.
 
Yes! I agree this 4Runner has great braking power. A similar thing happened to me last friday, this person cut across 2 lanes to make a left hand turn at the signal. It was during lunch time traffic and the guy in front of me slammed his brakes. I slammed mine and felt brake assist and abs kick in. I was surprised of the braking power... Ironically, there was another car behind me who couldn't stop in time..but luckily he was smart and changed lanes while braking to avoid rear ending me!
 
leftyrb is correct... the system maintains a second, smaller brake fluid reservoir (called an "accumulator") that's available for solenoid valves and even an electric pump to control. When the computer decides that you're moving the brake pedal fast enough to possibly be a panic stop and the vehicle is moving fast enough to require braking assistance, the extra fluid is applied to the brake system. And if that's not enough, the pump kicks in to add hydraulic pressure.

I can't get over how the 4Runner will stop on a dime! I've driven other Toyota products with brake assist, but the 4Runner's seems the most sensitive and the most effective. On the test drive, a squirrel ran across the road and I hit the brake, and I stopped!!!

Wow a true animal lover! Also the electronic brake force distribution is a great feature. Really helps you keep a straight line when braking. I wish ALL cars came with brake systems like our T4R's that are nearly idiot proof (not implying anyone or anything) what with all the idiots on the road today. The world would be a safer place for all of us.
 
Same stopping distance as a '02 Audi S4 and an '06 BMW 750i, which are both considered performance sedans...

And probably lighter than the 4Runner. I can't agree more with you folks about the awesome braking performance of the 4Runner...

Back in late December I found myself in a situation where I had to apply the brakes in my 4Runner VERY hard.
Going from 70 mph to 0 while tracking dead on straight made me appreciate the 4Runner's stopping ability.
The smaller, Suzuki SUV in front of me probably Thanked God I was able to stop in time and not make their vehicle even smaller.
 
4-piston front calipers gives us great brakes and putting the 4Runner with luxury and performance sedans. :)
 
4Piston calipers.

I had to slam on the brakes once, because I was driving too fast & following too close.

Got to slow down & keep our ego at home. Life is not a race.
 
.......typical subaru move IMHHO.

the post a few weeks ago on EBD from Thai was an excellent and concise descript on why these brakes work so well. with the SE model I think the brakes (front) are a touch larger than our brethren SR5 but can be ordered on the Limited perhaps the SR5 as well. Same as the Bimmer 750>?

The Runner Rocks! I hear it's snowing in Montana. Can any one up there post with pics? I would like to complete digesting my turkey and dream about my SE in Snow!
 
any one got a link to a vehicle stopping distance site? one which lists vehicles NOT how to calculate it? thanx.
