I haven't changed the pads on the Runner yet, but it looks like the same design as in all Toyotas I've owned. So I don't think there would be anything really holding the pads on the caliper. There may be a spring that pulls the pads off the rotors, but that is very small and doesn't really hold the pads in place.
Maybe you just need to wack the caliper with a rubber mallet to loosen it up. If no rubber mallet, a piece of wood on and a regular hammer work tool.
