Brake controller mounting.

I decided to put it it in the compartment below the climate control. Removed the trim panel, cut a hole in the back and ran the wires through. Secured with Velcro and called it a day. Fits well, in hind sight I would have mounted in the space above but I’m happy with it for now.

I have that same controller coming in a few days. I thought about mounting it to the left of steering wheel down by knee, but now that you mention the airbag I'll reconsider. Glove box sounds like a winner. With regard to color codes, you didn't purchase the Tekonsha/Toyota wiring harness? You simply plug it in, screw a ground into metal and your done.

Unfortunately on the left by your knee is the best place. If you ever need to apply the brakes to just the trailer you can’t when it’s in the glove box. If the weight of the trailer being towed changes, you will need a passenger to adjust the brakes as well. You will bump the controller here and there getting in and out but that’s about the best place to put. Went through this not long ago. Buy the Toyota plug a play harness and be done with it.

In the glovebox is a terrible idea.

Seems like you don't tow much, so you could slap some industrial Velcro on the controller and somewhere on the dash. THen just plug it in and slap it on when needed. That way you can keep it in your glovebox when not needed.

I'm considering a Redarc controller. The "guts" can be remotely mounted and the manual controls can be mounted wherever and is only a knob.

Towed many times. I’ve owned 2 car trailers and have done a fair amount of heavy hauling. Always had the controller down by my right knee. I’m towing a single axle 3000lb travel trailer that may vary 500 lbs. it’s not going to need to be adjusted a lot.

In the past I’ve just wired it up with the pigtail that comes in the glovebox. It’s a 5 minute job I was just being lazy and asking. Depending on where and how I mount it I may need a fairly long harness. I’ll check alldata at work tomorrow.

The Redarc is great! Well worth the extra money for a clean install.

Lol. I tried this. I thought I had a great idea considering I don’t need a brake controller often in my 4runner but when you park in the sun and the interior heats up it just falls off. Then again, I ‘m in Las Vegas and it get well over 100 regulary here. Might be a little different back east.

Can someone comment on the compatibility of the RedArc to the 4runner? etrailer.com says that 4runner is not a compatible application. I thin the tech there was saying that its because there is no ground. I assume they mean there is no Toyota specific vehicle harness............but I suppose you can take the factory supplied breakout wiring and make it work?

That looks nice, but why go all the way to the overhead, when there are so many blank switch plates to the left of the steering wheel? (and at least one to the right of the steering wheel). I assume you ran the cable down the drivers A-Piller?
