Brake Dust Prevention?

It seems with all the technology we have they could make a SUV
that dosent allow brake dust to spray on the rims.

Is there anyway to fix this or do we just have to use good ole' hands on technique to remove it.

Ditto. Trust me, 4runners do not make nearly enough brake dust as a BMW!

i find this to be a real problem with the 4th gen 4runners...my 2000 was great, and there would rarely be brakedust on the rims. the new ones, you wash them and drive around the corner, and theres a black film already. someone told me to replace the brake pads, with metalic (silver) coloured pads, and problem solved! it doesnt show up on the rims since the dust is silver

I am not a big fan of metallic dust pads. They make a lot of noise and they may damage your discs over time.

Best way to avoid the problem is wash often and put a coat of wax on the rims, then you can just use the california car duster and they clean right up.

I find it's easy to clean the damn gigantic beast if done often, I will say that I've seen many cars with front rims coated in brake dust can't say BMW is the only 1 at fault, usually it's the owner lack of common sence to wash the rims when they wash the vehicle, with all the emphasis being put on rims today you would think people would catch on to clean them.

I use to detail cars and realized that the brake dust will eventually eat into the finish on the rims, if left on for a long time:

Well, for me, i am just plain too darn lazy to clean my cars. Right now, i must have the dirtiest BMW and 4runner in my state!

Yep, if you put a good coat of wax on them, the dust doesn't stick as well. When i rotate my tires, I clean them really good, inside and out, then give 'em a couple coats of wax. Between washings, if it hasn't been raining, I just wipe down the wheels before I pull out of the garage........if is raining, I usually don't go out...:banana: :banana:

hehe, I hear that complaint from my girlfriend all the time - her 530I has a nasty brake dust problem. I initially thought something was wrong, but I guess it's pretty common for the BMW.

They look like they might help, but they also look like crap. i have seen them on some cars before and the completely block the view of the rotor and caliper, which are cool looking components. I am sure they work well, but some function has to be sacrificed for looks.

Yep. People want to see the rotors, and when they open up the wheel design for good viewing there gets to be a dust problem.

I also wonder if they would interfere with airflow cooling the brakes in certain situations?

I'm not sure if I am obsessive compulsive, but I keep a pile of rags in the rear storage compartment. Once or twice a day I will go over the entire vehicle with the rag to remove any dust/dirt from the vehicle. Takes about 5 minutes or so to do each day, but it saves on car washes majorly.

Whenever I do wash the truck, I make sure I use the aluminum wheel cleaner by Eagle One each time. It cleans the tires so they are a pure black, and cleans the white lettering off aswell. Not to mention keeps the wheels looking amazing.

Anyways, am I the only one who does the rag thing?
