Brake Pad Choices

Well it's about time to replace the brake pads and so I was shopping on-line. I do not see TRD brakes available for our generation, only 2003 and up. I see "OE" pads, and also "Hawk" and "EBC" brands. Does anyone have any particular brand preference and model or any negative experience with a brand? Also what about the shoes for the rear?

I still have the factory pads on my 4runner, all of my cars have Porterfield R4S on them, but while they do stop better, they creat a lot more dust than a factory pad. As far as the ones you mentioned, i would go Hawk over EBC from my past experiences.

I really like Akebono ceramics which don't squeal and leaves very minimal brake dust on your wheels.

I ran alot of different pads in my autocrossing days in the '90s and Akebonos worked well on my Eclipse and on my 4Runner they've been great and won't bother using anything else.

My original pads lasted for 143K and I used Akebono but it produces a lot of dust so I will change it with EBC. I've used EBC on my other ride and happy with the result, good braking with less brake dust.

I would definitely go with OEM again. Expensive? Yes, but I've got 108k on my front pads with a little less than 1/2 life left.

thanks everyone, i did decide to go with Toyota OE brake pads and shoes. And the OE pads and shoes are actually less expensive than the fancy aftermarket ones.
