Brake Pads all wrong ...from local store

has anyone sucessfuly purchased front pads for an 03' 4R? mainly from 'autozone' or 'advanced' all their part numbers that have 436 in them were wrong. they are too small. he checked 4 different brands (with all similar part numbers containig 436 )but all we the same ...all wrong. so i wanted to get this done tonight, which means no dealership around open.

so anyways, anyone know the secret?

I bought some raybestos pads for mine last year. But I will now only use TOY pads. They are built much better than anything I have seen IMO
Obviously autozone cannot get it right.

Toyota brake pads tend to be unique for some reason.
Aftermarkets, even if they fit right, often tend to squeak or to have a shorter life. Best bet is to stick with Toyota OEM on this one.

Do you have an SR5, or a Sport/Limited with the larger brakes?
Maybe they are giving you the basic SR5 pads when you need the larger ones!

Well it isn't just Autozone that can screw this up. Partznet gave me the smaller front pads for my 4runner even after stressing that I had a Sport with the larger brakes. And just recently they gave me 1st gen Sienna pads for my 2nd gen.

Wagner Thermo quite's are the best aftermarkt pad I have ever used. and you need 976 pads.

Do these ThermoQuiet pads need the shim plates? I am not sure, I think they don't because of the Insulation coating, can someone confirm this?

I called the local Toyota dealer and the brake pads for the SR5 and the Sport are the exact same part number.

I ended up ordering some Hawk HPS pads for my 4Runner the end of last week. They are also the same exact pad as the GX470, previous generation Tundra, and Sequoia. So if you have troubles getting the right ones, maybe ask for '03 Tundra pads.

I got the raybestos from autozone when the oem was squealing. I replaced mine around 20k miles. I now have put 45k miles on the runner and never experience the squeal again. It's also the right size, I just had to clean the holes on the pads. I also re-used the shims from the oem.

First of all, yes I do realize this is an older thread. But in case anyone is looking to do brake pads on a 2003 - in some of the computers at autozone's or advance auto parts stores the part numbers for brake pads are screwed up for 2003 4runners. I had to WALK back to autozone and have the guy look up brake pads for an '04 in order to get the correct brake pads. He tried to tell me it was not a screw up in their computer system, it's probably something with the new model 2003 4runner coming out mid-year. I didn't have the energy to argue with that moron that day. Anyway, after WALKING back home the '04 brake pads fit fine. I have a 2003 sport.
