Brake problem -Need help!

After many searches and reading a ton I am no closer to fixing my breaks. I thought maybe starting a new thread might get me some answers. So here is the problem;

The pedal is soft when you press it for the first inch or two, then it gets firm.
The pedal goes down farther than normal but not all the way to the floor. It also makes a woosh sound. You have to press very hard to get it to stop and even then it takes longer than normal to stop it.
i have checked the pads, they are all worn but not hitting the wear indicators yet.

I replaced the brake fluid. I am pretty sure I do not have any air in the lines, and I see no signs of leakage.

I have read that it could be a bad booster,or check valve, or master cylinder, or a leak, or air in the lines ect ect...

before I start replacing things I don't need to, can any of you guys shed some light on it??

You said Air in the lines twice but haven't indicated why you think there isn't air in the lines besides telling us there isn't

90% of the time this is air in the lines.

What year is your 4runner? The 2000-2002's have a unique bleeding procedure.

I used the mityvac hand pump when i bled my brakes and it worked well...but i didnt have a soft brake pedal to begin with. However, on my friends 99, he did the tbu and we bled the lines using the hand pump and the brakes felt "normal" but then we bled the system again using the two person brake pump method and it noticably firmed up his brake pedal.

A: its a 98 limited 4x4
A: I mention air in the lines because that's what I thought I would start with.

I used the old school method to bleed the brakes until I had clear fluid coming out. A few bubbles came out but I thought I had them all, Maybe there is still some in there. i think i will try a power bleeder or find a shop to do it for me.

Have you checked the adjustment on your rear drums? A lot of them don't auto adjust and that can make you have a very mushy pedal.
