Brake Replacement

Yeah, I will do that more next time. Just don't out of habit and the fact that brakes a much cheaper and easier to work on than engines and transmissions so I use them more. :- )

I know. Sorry, had downshift on the brain. I have been driving MT cars for 22 years and back in the day people used to say you should downshift to slow the car as opposed to using the brakes so much and I never agreed with that. Plus on track you use the brakes to slow the car, not the engine. :- ).

So much learning I must do with this car. (My yoda ism for today.)

The 4Runner is not a track car. Braking a 4600 lb vehicle going down a mountain is not even close to braking for turn 3 on a track in a 2K lb ride lol. Engine braking is preferred. Even on my MT Tacoma gearing down for steep descents is preferred to riding the brake.

On a track, there is a time component between curves that allow your rotors to bleed off some heat. On a steep long descent, it just keeps heating the rotors with no relief. That's why I said higher temp pads are not much of an advantage in this application. The OEM components are as good as anything out there in terms of wear and performance for this application. I've rolled off lots of long grades with a 2.5K trailer (only surge brakes - no service brakes) using engine braking and service brakes with no issues.

I was making the comparison of my 4Runner going down a windy two lane road at 40-45 mph slowing repeatedly for curves is very much like my 3500 lb stock sedan lapping a race track. In fact I would say the energy dissipated slowing the car on track is a greater demand on its braking system given the triple digit speeds and what not than the 4Runner on Old Priest grade, even though it weighs 1000 lbs more.

It is good to know though that the stock system works well enough to survive the conditions you put it through and mentioned above. The whole point of my original post was to find out if the TRD pads have a higher operating range than the stock ones seeing I reached the top end of the original pads pretty easily. All be it only once in the 8k miles I have driven my 4Runner.
 
Squeaking in Back Brake?

Hey Guys, new owner of a 5th Gen 40k miles. I am hearing a slight squeak in the back brakes when lightly applying pressure. Goes away if I step a little harder. Brake pads bad already? I just drove it off the lot? Any help is appreciated.

No. Brake squeal is caused by the pads vibrating against the caliper. Most times it is caused by the backing plates being dirty. Some pad compounds are more prone to squeal than others. Most times it is cured by taking the pads out and cleaning them and contact points on the calipers, lubing them, and then reassembling.

I might try a different rotor and pad combo as the stock brakes are not ''progressive'' in their feel.......tend to grab right before the stop and yet are spongey on initial push. Not firm and progressive like my other trucks.:Cry:
