Brake Rotor replacement question

I just read some of the posts about replacing the rotors and pads in this forum but still have a question.

I was trying to replace the after market 20" wheels from the 04 4runner 4x4 i bought a few weeks ago. but for some reason the factory 16" wheels just don't fit. it seems the hub outside diameter is 4.26" and the inside diameter of the wheel is 4.16".

i went to Kragens to see if they have a hub i can measure the diameter but the girl behind the count told me 4x4 whees are different then the 2x4 wheels... and the hub contails 4x4 electronics and best not to remove it myself.

Questions:

1. how easy is it to replace the rotors? is there a concern on removing the hub? can someone provide some instructions?

2. are 4x4 wheels different then 2x4s?

You didn't mention the model '04 you bought, but I'm gonna guess it is either a V8 sport or Limited. Both of them had an option for larger front rotors, and came with standard 17" wheels. Because of the larger rotor, the caliper is also different, and most 16" wheels will not fit without some machining work, or a hub spacer. As far as I know, the bolt pattern is the same between the two types of hubs, so that shouldn't be an issue. But because the caliper and its mounting bracket are different, I don't believe you could just install the 16" rotor. And, I think you will find that the wheel is hitting against the caliper, so just changing the rotors will not help, you would have to change the calipers and brackets. You would be better off sticking with 17" wheels if possible.

OK, where did the wheels you are trying to mount come from? You questioned in your original post something about possible differences between the 2x4 and 4x4 wheels. Not having seen a 2x4 4Runner in the north, I can't say for sure if they might be different, but I don't see why they would be, as long as we are talking about the same generation. If the wheels you are trying to mount are from an earlier generation (pre-'03), that might be the problem. I seem to remember other threads about some wheels from earlier 4Runners not fitting the center hubs on the 4th gen models, but I don't know for sure.
 
i have 2 sets of wheels that don't fit.

1. 2007 FJ Cruiser 17" wheels.
2. 2007 4Runner 16" wheels, these look the same as the original factory 6-spoke ones.

A dealer service mgr i spoke to this morning told me he had the same problem finding wheels that fit his 04 4Runner 2x4 as well and there is no difference between the 2x4 and 4x4 wheels.

he told me 2003 & 2007 4Runner wheels don't fit his 04 4Runner. Only Tacoma TRD 17" fit. i measured his hub size and it's the same 4.26" in diameter.

Did anyone put FJ Cruiser wheels on 03-07 4Runners?

Somebody else is going to have to jump in here, because I don't understand why the '07 wheels won't fit your '04. As far as I know, there is no difference in hub size on any of the 4th gen 4Runners, Taco's or Tundra's. I'm sure I have read of people using the new FJ wheels on 4Runners, the only difference being the backspacing, which has nothing to do with the hub.


PS: After thinking on this a while, another possibility comes to mind. You mentioned that you had aftermarket 20" wheels on it now. Some aftermarket wheels use different size spacer rings to allow one wheel to fit more than one type of vehicle hub.l Is it possible one of these spacer rings is still attached to the vehicle hub after you pull the aftermarket wheel off, and not allowing the OEM wheel to fit?

I thought about the ring thing too but didn't know if that's a valid concern. I'm putting it on the rack today to check it against my friend's 04 4runner 4x4 he bought new.

problem solved.

problem solved. there were plastic rings around the base of the hubs increasing the diameter of the hub. the rust covered the edges so i couldn't see them. Removed them and now both 17" FJ Cruiser and 16" 4Runner factory wheels both fit.

also, the 17" wheels/tires is 1 size larger (265-70x17) but clears the fenders just fine. Although off the line feels a little slower or less torquie. The ride is a lot more quieter and smooth handling. I don't feel every crack on the road any longer.

I'll see what happens with the fuel economy. thanks guys!!

DAMN! I read your other thread, I totally forgot to ask about the hub spacers! Good call Tech.

There is a steel FJ wheel also.

Check my signature. I have the same FJ wheels you linked to. They have a 15mm offset, which translates into 1/2 in. extra clearance on the inside and obviously stick out an extra 1/2 in. on the fender side.
