Brake Upgrades?

Hey guys,

So its getting to be about that time, time for new brake pads, and my rotors could use a resurfacing too, so since im going to spend some cash anyways, i wonder if anybody knows of any good brake upgrade kids for my 2012 SR5.

I know 4th gen guys will use Tundra kits as an upgrade but i cant find much about upgrading my 5th gen brakes.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Nope most of us use oem or I replaced mine with some Centric & Hawk pads ! Not like the bad 4th caliper problem ! Bought used & had some crappy knock-off slotted ones made all kind of noise so ^!

on my other vehicles I get many years on the rotors. my truck now 17 yrs old I replaced the rotors when 9yrs old. still had a good surface but the rust started to damage them slightly so I replaced at that time.

on brake pads I do use the advance auto silver or gold pads. these do work good rotors wear little and the braking is good..

on the 2016 T4R with 4K miles now the rotors are showing some wear. so I will be removing those OEM pads and install the advance pads to see how well the work compared to Toyota pads. advance does have lifetime warranty ..pay once and if they suck you get your money back.

Yes. OEM pads and rotors cannot be beat. I personally have run them 70K twice and still had pad left with no issues.
[MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION] went close to 100K on OEM pads and rotors.

We did a poll awhile back and the AVERAGE was 70K on stock brake components with a bunch of people participating. We also determined that OEM wipers, pads, rotors and Toyota oil and filter could not be beat as far as performance, longevity and price.

If someone is getting wear at 4K then they are riding the brake or two footing it.

The 4Runner has one of the best 60-0 stopping distances out there with stock brakes. Never mind it weighs 4600 dry. Tough to improve on that.

Really? I've only driven European sports coupes and the 5th Gen T4R, so I know my perspective is off but...

IA few weeks ago I had to brake suddenly when some snowbird ******* from New England decided to dart across traffic to get to his AARP meeting, and I was totally shocked how shitty this thing stops.

I can't even imagine being in something like a GC and it being worse. :violin:

I really dig my EBC yellow stuff pads, other than them squeaking more than stock, they stop my truck's fat ass fairly quickly. And my rig weighs 6500lbs.

Pretty sure the GC with the V6 has a shorter 60-0 distance.

But i can say the 4Runner seems like the initial reduction in speed happens faster, maybe due to the super-sensitive brake assist. (Not a bad thing)

About 6-8 months ago I installed drilled/slotted rotors front and rear and Advics brake pads. I'm really happy w/ the setup. PM me if you need part #'s

Wow really ? I'm one of those guys (tailgater) & i'm always very impressed how I don't rear end someone ,that said I think it(4r) stops pdq ! I was merging onto freeway here on a 2 lane merge lane when this old-timer decided to flip a U-turn in front of me maybe 10 ft & due to my exceptional driving skills only managed to just barely clip him , thought was pretty good stopping power ! Now I have a place to mount front lic. plate (cover up ) . But that's just me :lookout:

I'm using the OEM rotors with EBC Extra Duty pads. They're an outstanding combination. No fade with rock crawling /off-roading, and consistently great grip even when cold or wet

Don't think so, at least not in the 4R. I know different manufacturers use "brake assist" to describe different types of systems though.

Agreed. I remember the first time that kicked in on me (braking hard for a deer) crazy how fast these pigs will actually stop. Scary.

I just replaced the rears with EBC Green stuff after a positive report from [MENTION=104049]marshal[/MENTION]. The fronts actually still had a lot of life, so I left them on for the summer trip.

I found it really odd that the rear pads wore out so much faster than the fronts.
Perhaps because they are so much smaller?

Putting fronts on when I get home and have everything apart for UCAs.

Just did my brakes a few weeks ago. Only 48k miles, but did it to get rid of a pulsing that's been there since I bought the truck (used.)

I went with OEM rotors and TRD pads. Only real reason for the TRD pads was because a member here had them in the classifieds for a pretty good price. Figured I'd give them a shot.

I did the recommended bedding in procedure, and so far so good. Braking is smooth again, which was the whole point of doing the job. Whether or not the TRD pads are any improvement over stock, I can't really tell.

I don't regret the TRD pads, but if I hadn't seen them in the classifieds here, I'd have just gone with OEM and probably been just as happy.

Pardon me for being an idiot...what's this "bedding in" procedure. Getting my brakes done next week, and doingthe same thing - upgrading to the TRD brake pads.
