Brake warpage on '02

My brakes are warped like crazy at 40K. Are these brakes undersized for the T4R? I'd love to get a disk brake kit, if there is one, for the back. Anyone else have brake issues?

so you think the 4runner doesn't stop fast enough? bah.. as for the warpage, get the rotors turned, install quality pads, and dont ride the brakes.
 
i had issues with destroying brakes in 40k when i was 16, but not now. you might want to try driving long and not accelerating when there is a red light in front of you, or if you already do that, then....

All Pro Offroad sells a rear disc brake conversion kit for a 3rd gen 4runner

I have the above kits installed on my 02 T4R and while the braking has improved, i no longer have an E-brake, and I have a 140$ FJ master cylinder, if you get the kit, try and get calipers that will work with your existing brake kit, or maybe you and I should get together and work on a transfer case parking brake for the 3rd gen. the kit is around 500 USD but so is replacing the rear drums when they go out, so thats why I did it, installing it by yourself is going to be difficult unless you have alot of tools, so try to have someone help you. good luck

I don't ride the brakes, but I am a pretty agressive driver and should probably mellow out a little. I've has so many cars and some have brake warping issues because, to me, the brakes are undersized.
I'll just get them turned and deal with it.
 
i have heard more and more people discuss undersized brakes on the T4R, and i think i would have to agree, it doesnt stop very well to begin with, but you are driving a 2 ton truck, with drum brakes in the back. if you dont want to change your driving style (and trust me, i know that it can be tough) then i would suggest upgrading your brake system.

so you have a limited? i have a 98 ltd and it stops faster than most other cars on the road, stops nearly as fast as my old 90 celica, which had disc all the way around..
correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe limited models have larger brakes
 
It stops fine, the pedal is a little soft and the rotors are warped. I was just wondering if anyone else had that problem. I've only had it 8 months, it had to be the other owner.

My 01 Silverado 2500HD had 4 wheel disk, 11" rotors and didnt' have a problem. I did look at that disk upgrade kit, it looks cool and there is an e-brake attachment.
 
Having a Limited, you have slightly larger brakes than the SR5. As far as getting 4 wheel disc, I would think getting a getting one to go with the VSC, ABS and the master cyl. would be a engineering problem too hard to figure out. Remember your warped brakes are your disc brakes, maybe you should go with 4 wheel drum brakes.;):

We have quite a few threads talking about how long our brakes last, some over 100,000 miles. I had the brakes checked early this Summer before my big trip and they were fine. I have 73,000 miles so far. As far as your brakes go, remember "shit happens".:happens:
 
what kit did you look at?? ive been everywhere trying to figure out how to get my parking brake to work, so send me a link

Just took my rig in this morning for "pulsating brakes". About a month ago, the dealer resurfaced the front rotors and put new pads. For the rear, all they did was clean and adjust. Lastnight I noticed the pulsating again so I took it back. Said the rear drums might be warped. WHAT THE HECK! Get it straight. I hope they call me when my truck is cured. I hate braking and its not smooth. I will definitely get the cross drilled set-up from burtmanindustries.com when it comes time to change the rotors.

4runner front brake system is underpowered for the weight of the vehicle. Many people have complained about warped rotors.

Do what I did. Upgrade to the tundra brake system. The tundra rotors are massive compared to the 4runner's rotors and if you need new rotors, the only extra expense you have is the calipers. I used fully-loaded Raybestos calipers and the truck stops like a champ. Before, I was pumping the heck out of my brakes for the truck to stop. I should also tell you that I had stock 15" rims w/ 28" tires but upgraded to 16" wheels with 32" tires. This was part of the problem.

Here's a few pics of the rotors and calipers on the truck. Sorry I was too lazy to remove the wheels. Also, there is a ton of write-up on this upgrade at yotatech.

I should be replacing drums soon as I have close to 100k on the original ones. I don't know if I care not having the e-brake since I have an auto but can you tell me whether the $500 includes the FJ master cylinder. I have access to a shop but would want to know how difficult this was. Can you reply to this thread with some contact info? I'm not a regular here and PM's don't come up automatically so I forget to check. Thanks.

Ended up getting a whole new OEM Toyota brake set-up for free. Dealer agreed to give me new rotors and pads for the front for their mess-up.

I know this system is underpowered. Since it was free, I took it. But for next time, cross drilled will have to be along with ceramic pads.
