Brakes on 05 4runner...

Can anyone maybe point me to a link that would detail how to change the rear brakes on my 4runner? I've done a search here as well as google without a whole lot of luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Search "brakes" and rear brake remove. When taking off the rotors be extra careful that you wiggle the rotor back and forth after adjusting the E-brake shoes to the allow the greatest clearance. Otherwise you will bend the clips holding the brake shoes of the parking brake.

On the Lexus 470 there are two threaded bolts holes so you can screw bolts into the rotor and forceable break the rotor loose. I assume you have the same bolt holes. They are great to break loose that rotor. Bang it releases. Take out the bolts. Do not use them to force the rotor laterally over the shoes that are dragging and binding to the rotor. The rotor will kant and drag the shoes laterally with it. Then you bend the retaining clips and let me tell you you are in for an experience. It will take you hours to take the shoes off, restraighten the retaining pins, deal with springs that are very strong and work with little clearance. You'll wonder if you need to pull the axle to get the working room. I'm sure you will bleed and wonder why you ever decided to do the brake job yourself. It goes from one hour to four hours.

Morale fo the story. Just release the e-brake shoes by adjusting to the most clearance and wiggle the rotor off by hand. Then you will find it is simple and satisfying. One scenario is driving down a nice country land and the other is running off the road, hitting a tree, having your wife with you and hurting her shitsu because you were trying to find a rattle in the dash. Al.

Just wanted to add my experience for those who plan to do this. If you are replacing just the pads, it's really easy. If you need to replace/remove the rotors, I agree with aljodoro - it is a big pain the arse.

The rear rotors are almost like drum brakes, there are shoes underneath the rotor. I ended up getting the rotors off with pry bar and lots of brute force, but the removal screw holes (8mm, 1.25 pitch) was pretty useless - ended up cracking them. I could not find any adjustment (i.e star wheel) for the shoes and there was no info in the factory shop manual.

My 2 cents - I would have easily paid someone to replace the rear rotors if I knew it was that bad. Pads you can easliy do yourself.

I have R&Red my rear rotors twice since it keeps warping them on my 04. They have come off with little effort each time. I think a lot has to do with where you live and drive. If you live in the rust belt or do a far amount of beach driving/live in a coastal region you will see more rust/corrision on the brake components which will make them much more difficult to remove for replacement. I lived in Michigan for 15 years and every time I did a brake job up there it was a PITA.... Since I live in North Carolina now near Raleigh and the only time my vehicles see the salty air/roads is the couple times a year we visit the beach, I NEVER go to MI in the winter anymore. My brakes are very easy to remove. Put a good coat of anti-seize compound on the wheel studs and around the hub where the rotor makes contact and your job will be much easier the next time.
