brakes pads

I have nearly 60k miles and I was told my brakes look to be about 15% (they squeak too)....should I buy some "good" brakes pads online and have a shop install them, or just go to a brake shop and have them install what they suggest/sale, etc.... I don't know jack about brakes and don't know which ones I should go with if I was to order some online, etc.

Ask the shop for the prices.

Go with medium range pads (medium price range)

Mine are medium range and they're fine.

They were $55 total (front pads, both wheels)

Most shops won't install parts they don't supply, and certainly won't warranty them.
Ask the shop about the different types of pads (ceramic,semi-metallic, etc) and decide which is better for you.

Buy and install the pads yourself. Very easy job!

I purchased an OEM pad (front) online for about $50 and get one of the independent shop install it for $20. This guy is cheaper then most people so you may have to pay a little more. If you have to re-surface the disks then it may cost more.

You can do the front brakes in less than 30 minutes for both sides (4th gen). Remove the clips, then the pins. Compress the caliper pistons and remove the old pads and shims. Replace the pads and ships, put the pins and clips back.

Easier done than said. Seriously. I'll do the brakes on the 4Runner any day over an oil change, even though the 4.0 V6's oil change is one the cleanest ones out there.
