Brakes started to fail on me

I was driving today and after about 15 miles of highway driving, I pulled off onto city streets to get to my house. About a mile onto the city streets, I needed to brake(a little stronger than I would at a normal stop but not anywhere close to panic braking or anything like that). My brakes weren't working very well, my ABS kicked in, and it felt exactly like I was on snow or ice. Except that the road was clean, bone dry, and it was 90 degrees outside. No sand or other stuff on the road. It freaked me out so I pulled over thinking I had a flat but my tires looked fine. Kept on going an it happened again on another road when I tried to brake next. By then I just decided to drive like a grandma, keep in gear so I could engine brake to scrub off speed if I needed to. Made it home 2 miles later.

I looked at my brake fluid and the level was not low at all. Brakes were almost new 8K miles ago when I had them checked after buying this 4Runner. What could be going on??? I'm afraid to drive it now until I figure this out and this is my only vehicle.

Many members on here have run into issues with their calipers freezing up on them and not working properly, that could be(although I hope not) what you are experiencing.

I'm having the same issue with my '05 but seems only to be the right front. Today I popped off the ABS connections to make sure they were good. I didn't have any issues the rest of the day but suspect that since it was intermittent to begin with that it's the calipers.

perhaps...

• Caliper frozen
• Need a brake flush & bleed
• Something lodge in between your pads & rotors

I have also seen on some vehicles where one or two wheel speed sensors will start to fail, by letting the signal drop out as the vehicle slows down. That makes the computer think that those wheels are locked up like on ice, thus activating the abs. All that without a warning light. You would never see without a good scanner that can display individual wheel speeds. Bad wheel bearings can wipe out those sensors too, so check those as well.

Mines an 05 and yours is an 08. Did the crappy batch affect both years?

I don't know the model years affected, but if you look up the part number and it's the same, then maybe.

But it's truly depressing that some thing that was made to save your life can actually put you at risk.

Couple g x and l x had the same issue, you can see the forums.


Good luck man, Toyota willntell you it's not covered under warranty, you should fight it out if possible. They are f o s. And know there is a defect.
