Brakes...WTF??

I purchased rotors for my 02 Sport at Autozone, specified the 16" rims of course. The rotors they gave me were smaller than the rotors I had on there. I went back to Autozone and every rotor they had for the 3rd gen 4Runner was smaller than the rotor I have. I looked at an 02 Tundra rotor and it was the same diameter as my rotor, but was slightly thicker and had more cooling vanes. Can anyone clarify what rotors I have on my vehicle right now? Was Autozone's system just screwed up and did not show the proper part number for my rotor?

Which Tundra rotors did you compare to? There were different tundra rotors used based on the caliper casting number. It could have been one of the other ones.

Not sure about casting number. I know we looked at 02 4x4 w/ V8 Tundra rotors but that's all the detail I have. Are the 02 Tundra rotors the same diameter as any third gen 4Runner rotors?

My Duralast rotors are P/N 31204. Can't recall the difference in size vs stock.

That was the same part number they give me for what is supposed to be an 02 4x4 w/ 16" rims and it was quite a bit smaller than my rotor. Is it possible the previous owner did the Tundra upgrade?

That's probably what happened but the question why are you now trying to replace them? I thought the Tundra brake mod was the cure all.

Arent the tundra rotors and the 4runner rotors the same diameter anyway....Its just the thickness thats different which is why you have to get the tundra calipers.

Yep. That's right. My mistake. The Tundra rotors are the same diameter as the rotors that come with the 16 inch wheeled 4Rs.

If that's the case then why would my rotors be larger than any of the 3rd gen rotors at Autozone?

I was replacing the rotors because of an issue that appeared to be indicative of warped rotors. While using the brakes I'd get a steering wheel shimmy which normally points to warped rotors. After throwing in my 5100's and the shimmy disappearing I've concluded that the bushings in my Tundra struts were so destroyed that the strut body was shaking under hard braking. Now that the new struts are in, even with the old rotors and pads, she is braking as she should be.

I'm sure the guy behind the counter handed you the rotors for a 15" wheel equipped 4Runner on accident.

The Tundra rotor you were referring to is the 199mm brake. They're only wider, not bigger. The 231 is larger.

That's what I thought too, but then he checked the part number for the 15" wheels and it was both a different part number and smaller than the first rotor he brought out (which was the part number for the 16" wheels).

go with Brembo, they are a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Quality of steel has gone seriously downhill in the US. Cheap rotors are made with cheap steel.
