Braking - Hold on tight!

This new 4R never stops surprising me! Driving down a hill around a corner (take it a minimum of 4 times a day) to find a large Town truck backing up down the road, in MY lane as I round the corner! (NE area, big winds, they were cleaning up branches on the side). I hit the brakes with a medium amount of force but I guess the 4R thought it was more so an emergency and really slammed the brakes on! I could feel the pedal actually depress further than I was pressing, ABS was pulsing (no tires were slipping though), it was amazing to me. I was never at risk of hitting the truck or any people, plenty of time to stop. Like with any surprise situation you hit the brakes to make sure though. It really brought the 4R to a slow roll very quickly.

I read about this feature but I am not exactly sure what it is called, something to do with brake assist? Either case I can really see how something like this would help save lives and prevent accidents. It instantly felt like it took control of the situation.

PS - Was actually heading to the dealership to have another spare key made They had 1 new 4R on the lot (SR5 w/ cloth), dealer plate on the back, people were signing the paperwork inside, I know they just recently got it in too.

Agree. I feel like this vehicle is extremely safe. I'm up to 3,400 miles now having owned for 3 months and still cannot wait to get behind the wheel!

Yea similar story for me as well. Was getting off the highway section of a road here where about three different off ramps merge to a two lane road with two left turn lanes and a right turn lane. I was in the left of the two lanes going straight and some idiot kid decided to cut from the right turn lane into the nearest left turn lane right in front of me! I applied the brakes somewhat forcefully but not enough to make the truck lose control and it really slowed the thing down much quicker than i ever expected. So far since picking it up on black friday i have just over 5,000 miles and loving every mile of it!

The computer will sense how fast you've taken your foot off the gas and applied the brakes. It uses that time to determine if you're making a panic stop and apply the brakes harder.

I've only experience Brake Assist once on mine. It pretty much throws you forward and plants the front bumper into the pavement (ok, the bumper part is an exaggeration). I recall a member here complaining that it kicks in too much for him in stop and go traffic, making him looking like he doesn't know how to drive.

Very cool engineering - however, at the end of the day, the value of this feature is measured its effectiveness at avoiding accidents (which it sounds like it succeeded with for you) but it leaves me to wonder if the technology does a good job of determining a panic stop in general. In other words, I wouldn't like it if this mode would be activated unnecessarily making it more difficult to control my vehicle the way I intend to - potentially leading to getting rear ended.

I guess it's just a matter of gaining enough experience with the braking system to where I've learned how much force and how quickly applied engages the brake assist.

Uneek, is it just the speed between the gas then brake, or does it take into account brake pressure also? I too have noticed a harder brake then I wanted in stop and go traffic, but I thought it was simply "new" brakes. Could be I am just too quick off the pedal....unless force is also taken into the equation.

The brake assist on the 4runner seems dumber than what Infiniti uses on their G35/G37. On the 4runner, it seems like there's a longer delay before it kicks in. I know it's like comparing apples and oranges, but I figured I'd vocalize my comparison.

Yeah, I got brake assist and it rescued me over 50x easily. Just be careful not to rely on it if you know what I mean.

Seems black friday is a popular day to buy a new T4R....Westwind looks like we have almost the same truck mine is magnetic gray SR5 as well...with the leather package and roof....Awesome truck so far ive loved every minute of it! And for the guys who say it doesnt have much grunt or wish it had a V8...Im saying its awesome and i owned an 07 5.7 V8 Tundra before this soo...

They need to limit them around 118 - 120, like my last suv. I know that we should 'never' be doing 105 with them (legal & safety) but..... my friends Yukon hit its limiter right around 100 and the little YARIS blew right by him and kept going! That can cause you to loose serious man card points .

Your tires are not rated for those speeds. Therefore they limit to right below the max tire speed installed. The Yaris probably had T, U, or H rated tires stock therefore a different limiter.

that has to be a typo

last i read, 60-0 stopping was around 130 or 140 feet. cant remember exactly, but no way is it 200+ feet!

I've only had brake assist kick in once on me. I made a bunch of hard stops before, but none ever stopped that "violently". From the description that I've read, it seemed based on the time from gas to brake. The computer would apply more or maximum brake pressure, in the event the driver hasn't applied the brakes hard enough to avoid an accident.

Let me dig around my PC, for product introduction, brochure and FSM for a better and clearer understanding.
