BRAND NEW - looking for some tips

Hello Everybody,

I am brand spankin' new to this site and I'm looking for some tips from the pros all of you are...

On Friday, I bought a 2008 4Runner SR5 with 34k miles... pretty much came with moon roof and that's all for options.

I'm looking to see what I can do to improve gas mileage, performance, and overall looks/efficiency for my new baby... I was definitely thinking of throwing a new exhaust system on, thinking of dual if it's possible...

Let me know what you all think, I really appreciate it.

and i know what you're saying about the bank account too.... I own a 27' boat so I'm always sinking (literally) money into that baby too..

do air filters really add to HP and gas mileage? like if I were to buy a K&N, would it really do much for me?
 
An air filter? nothing really, an air intake? depends on brand. to be honest tuning would be better be it from urd or APR. you could throw some long tube headers on it.
 
you guys have any recommendations on an exhaust tip? I really havent found any definitive posts about one. I saw one that said valor valor valor but then I read later on in the post that dealerships have them on hold because they have an issue of falling off???

any thoughts?
 
First of all welcome, you will love your T4R!

This mod depending on what State you live in but it is free, remove the Hydrocarbon Filter. The HCF is only for California and it stops the unburned fuel from escaping.

Then place a less restrictive replacement filter. There is a lot of back and forth on this site what is the best type or brand of filter to use but prefer K&N (it looks identical to the TRD filter).

With this I know I have gained a minimum of 1 to 1.5 MPG.
 
Mind if I ask what you paid?

I just bout an identical 4runner a few weeks ago w/35k on it. The first thing I did was switch from conventional oil to synthetic ( I hear it helps a little with gas millage).
 
I would go ahead and switch to full synthetic fluids in your engine, Fr and Rear Differentials and transfer case. I never bothered to check for an actual improvement in mpg, but my computer immediately believed there was an increase.

If they haven't been done, your plugs are about due ( in reality they are probably nice and clean still, but it's time according to maintenance schedules). Check over your cabin air filter ( DIY and save big , toyota wants $50 to do it ).

The list goes on.....as for mods, start slow and figure out what is best for you. Do it right the first time is something many on here will tell you, and they are right! I am glad I took my time on items like lifts/wheels and tires. :pimp:

Here's a pic. You slide it in then you tighten up the screw behind it. No falling off.

you're not going to be able to improve looks without taking an MPG hit because the 4x4 aesthetic is about riding high on big tires.

life is about balance. strike a balance that makes you most happy.
 
Conspearasea, I'm definitely looking to start slow... I've never been into car mods or doing my own work, but since I bought a boat, I've been doing most of the repairs/maintenance on my own... mainly because it's so expensive on boats

I love doing the repairs/maintenance on the boat, and I want that to transfer to my "new" car... I want my T4R to last as long as possible, whether it be by taking it to the dealer for routine maintenance, or doing my own.

Anybody recommend a place to buy a service/repair manual for my t4r, I was planning on ebay but if you all think somewhere else, I'll definitely do it.

Therok, as of right now, I'd be looking to improve MPG any way I can. if synthetic oil or new air filters or whatever will do the job, count me in.

Come to work w/ me for two weeks offshore and that will cure you! Plenty of repairs and maintenance....somethings always broken on a Dive Support Vessel. Bigger the boat, bigger the problems. :dammit:

Seriously though, go ahead and switch to all synthetics and you will see a small improvement PLUS longer intervals between maintenance.

Good luck, you will likely love your runner for many years to come.
