break in period b4 towing?

Hello (first post by a potential new 4R buyer/ previous owner)...
I'm considering trading Honda Pilot in for a new 6cyl AWD 4Runner (probably Ltd). What is the recommended break in period b4 towing? Boat...w/ trailer just under 4,000 lbs.
Couple more questions:
- confirm that X-Reas is desirable option if to tow
- does 4R still give the option of locking out overdrive gear (while towing)?

Welcome to the forum! Toyota recommends not to tow for I believe the first 1000 miles. For towing, I would recommend the V8. You'll get the frame mounted hitch, oil and transmission coolers, heavier duty radiator and alternator, not to mention increased horsepower and most importantly torque.

Yes, unlike the Honda Pilot, with the 4runner you can lock the 5 speed auto transmission into any gear. Toyota recommends 4th gear for towing.

Thanks. While I would love the extra torque of the v8, the mileage would hurt...as I likely will do about 20k miles a year. Based on the limited boating season (in New England) and that I doubtfully would get a heavier boat, I'm thinking the 6 will be more practical & economical for me.
BTW, nice pup in your avatar. If I pull the trigger on the 4Runner and get active on this board, I'll have to create an avatar using my new Golden puppy.
