breaks grinding in 4wd ?

This is my second winter with my runner and I noticed last winter when I would be going downhill in 4 wheel drive my breaks would grind.. or so it would sound like, and I could feel the vibration in the pedal.. however it does not do this in regular drive mode. It is an automatic if this makes any diffrence. Im not sure if its because I was sliding on the snow/ice or if it is what naturally happens when going downhill in 4wd.

Also one more thing, when I click in the button for high speed 4wd why does it click on instantly sometimes and other times it flashes orange a good 40 seconds +. Do I have to be a certain rpm/speed ? I did not find much on this in the owners manual

Mine have done that slight grinding sound off and on for years, I wouldn't worry about it. Yours could be the ABS, but I know mine isn't because I took the ABS fuse out. It comes and goes, so far this winter I haven't heard it and I've been in 4x4 full-time for the last 4 days.

Yeah I only ask now because we are starting to get some snow. I never really worried much about it last winter but if i was starting to pick up momentum going down hill and the breaks were just skidding then I would drop it in gear 2 . This is my first 4x4 vehicle >_<

I have no idea why you would get a different sound in the brakes when in 4wd.

As far as going into 4wd. Try pushing the button and then let off the accelerator. This will take pressure off the system and it should go in.

You also said "high speed"? How fast are you going?

I've been able to lock mine in 4x4 doing about 60 because I happened to run into a sudden monsoon (that's FL for ya) and it took only 2-3 sec to engage and was very smooth.

It may take a while to engage, you're waiting for the gears to engage each other. Senario- In a perfect world if the gears are not aligned and you tried to engage 4x4 it would never happen. Luckily it's not, and your tires do not all have the same EXACT circumference so eventually the gears align and engage.

As for the grinding in 4x4 only, I'd have to say check fluid level and condition.
