Breather Nipple on Rear Diff

Hello all, I went to check my fluid level in my rear Diff, when I pulled off the fill plug, there was a lot of pressure escaping from the hole.

I noticed there is a spring loaded cap or button on the axle, Mine is severely corroded and might be stuck in the closed position.

Does anyone have any solutions for this same problem?

TIA

A lot of guys will unscrew that breather cap and install a barbed fitting, then run a length of hose to high up in the fender well. This is known as a "breather relocation" which might be the way you want to go... on a side note I need to get off my lazy ass and do this too! Lol

I didn't realize this breather cap screwed off, I didn't notice any flat edges for a wrench or socket, looks just like a round cap.

I'm just worried about snapping the cap off!

Is there a specific fitting from he dealer? or just a generic one through a parts store, as long as the threads match up!

The cap doesn't screw "off", the whole nipple screws out of the diff. The thread is a British pipe thread, 1/8" I think, not sold in stores in the U.S. You can force fit an NPT fitting into it, but it's not pretty. Search for "differential breather re-locate"; there should be some descriptions of where to get the proper parts to do it right.

Seriously? British Pipe Thread? The hell... Would have figured it to be metric before British.

An intake manifold fitting will fit.

I did this on my 5th gen with factory parts from Toyota, are the diff's the same? I just used the breather barb part number from the front diff's which are relocated to the engine bay and installed the same parts in the rear routed behind my tail light.

3/8 BSP fitting.. I think.

I believe that the Land Rover Disco 2's have the same fitting, those are easy to find in a scrap yard. But it is a banjo bolt that you would need to modify.

I was nervous about leaving mine in the fender well, and wasn't crazy about the fuel door location, as well.
There is a rubber grommet into the body just below the driver's taillight. Drilled a hole in this and ran the tubing up into the jack storage area. No possible way to get this thing wet.

Basically works just like this 5th gen solution, except I ended mine in the jack compartment. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/150158-rear-diff-breather-mod-complete.html

I used the same parts in the above post/link.

The Union is 1/4" so you need (...well I did anyway,) to use a little spacer tube to get to the 3/8" range that the breather is.

3/8" fuel line.
Vent location.
The wrong thread in the last picture, standard pipe thread...wrong size, like mentioned above, jammed into the diff...don't do that.

Someone mentioned it would be easier to run the line from the upper location down to the diff, in hindsight I would agree as I fed mine up from the bottom and it was in your face dirty.

instead of replacing the OE nipple, you can just pry off the cap, and slide a hose straight onto it.
then you can add a new properly capped end, mounted up higher somewhere.
