Brighten Data Display

We live in a rural area. We usually drive with our headlights on.

As a result, during the daylight hours we cannot read the data display in the center of the console. That is the display that shows direction, temperature, etc. In order to read that display we need to turn our headlights off.

Is there some way to make that display fully bright when the head lights are on on our 2011 4runner?

Don't you have DRL's on your 2011? Why don't you just turn your headlights off? I doubt there's any additional safety advantage to driving with headlights on versus just DRL's.

Sorry, I don't have an answer on adjusting the display brightness.

There should be a little wheel on the dash to the left of the steering wheel (right behind the blinker/headlights column). Make sure that is rolled all the way up to where it clicks and you should be able to have your dash panels at full brightness.

IIRC, there is information in the manual in your glove compartment about this. there is in mine but i have the navigation system too.

also, i agree, the DRL option stated above might be the best option.

1. Head to dealer and have them change the setting via TIS tool

2. Buy the Techstream cable/software online and change it yourself. Super easy to do and you can use it to change several other options without running to the dealer. You can also use it to clear codes and do some low-level diagnostics.

Neither will work if he has an SR5. I can't change it on my 2011 either.

The LE's (and maybe the TE's?) have a different dimmer switch. I have been tempted to find the resistor in the instrument cluster and bypass the damn thing, but I haven't...

Funny, I changed mine and I have an '11 SR5. Unfortunately, I dimmed mine too much and can't see the dash stuff during the day now!

I'll see if I can get a screen grab of the setting that I screwed with later today, gotta finish a job for a customer before I pull out the netbook and techstream cable.

That's news to me then- so Techstream will allow you to change the dash lights so they don't dim with the headlights on?

If that's true a lot of people on here will be happy... but I fear it isn't true.

Accidentally, the other day I was messing with the buttons up there and with holding one of them down for a few seconds, the light display got a lot brighter. Whichever one that doesn't reset the avg mpg is the one to press. I have a 2010 sr5. Hope that helps!

I'm not sure if this applies to older versions, but I'll add for future searchers. On my 2014 TE, if you press and hold the "mode" and "set" buttons together, a brightness adjustment pops up and allows you to choose from 3 levels. The lowest level is off.

I believe I have an SR5. I just looked at the vehicle and could not find any insignia. However, the vehicle has the luxury package (?) that includes moon roof and heated seats.

I have read the owner's manual and tried the thing on the left of the steering wheel. This does not seem to control the center data display.

The DRL turns on only the "parking" lights. Around here that means the vehicle is stationary. Most vehicles in our area drive with their head lights on.

It basically forces day brightness all the time when ALL the way up. If you're like me just turn the knob up during the day and down at night.

Well, I thought I found the setting:

But it doesn't seem to change anything with the display. Guess I was wrong, but I swear mine is doing the same thing! Its a bit dim when headlights are on.

Also, I tried that MODE+SET buttons, and that does change it from bright to dim to off (well, sorta), but you can only access that when the headlights are OFF. If they are in parking or headlight modes, you will get the adjustment for the compass! Just in case anyone tries that setting and sees something other than illumination 1 or 2 or off!

Sorry guys, thought those settings were for the illumination of the display!
